Just had a new Pioneer AVIC-D3 installed in my Black 06 Touareg.

Here is the first:

And the second:

Pioneer AVIC-D3 with iPod Connector, Bluetooth Phone adapter, and PAC-SWIPS steering wheel control interface. All installed using the Metra dash kit. Also, had my installer do the video bypass so video and programmability is available on the fly.

So far, I LOVE IT. GPS works great, navigated through Chicago the other night without a problem. As you can see I uploaded some kewl VW graphics I found on avic411.com and really looks factory fit.

Bluetooth sounds great, better then my old Motorola headset. No one can tell I'm not on the headset, and very very little background noise. iPod controls are good and sound quality is great.

My biggest concern was sound quality. I had the base speaker system, which I thinks sounds pretty damned good. I was truly impressed how good the Pioneer sounds on the stock speakers.

Installer put the GPS antenna under the dash compartment, similar to factory placement. I get great satelite signal without having the antenna in plain site!

Special thanks to Rich in Wheaton, IL for helping me VAG out the seatbelt chimes. Was so freakin easy, followed the directions on here and worked like a charm.

Hope this encourages other to take the plunge. I am so glad I did.

looking good
i agree with the sound output
at first i thought it was about the same as the stock (base) system untill i found the lousness setting

did the installer use any sort of can-bus adaptor ?

the only thing i dont like about my D3 install is now the stereo turns off when i turn the engine off (use to turn off when the key was pulled)

anychance you can burn a disk for me with the VW logo
i see it on AVIC411 but im pretty lame with the computer (that's why i own a mac)

Napa,
If you used the PAC-SWIPS and CAN-BUS to keep your Steering Wheel Controls, in addition the fourth wire, Red Wire, acts as the 12V switched accessory wire. I have mine set-up this way. When I turn the car on or click the key to the right the radio powers on. When I turn the car off the radio stays on until I REMOVE the key from the ignition, much like the factory stereo.

Also, you asked for the photos. In windows you can right click any of the photos and select Save As. Not quite sure with Mac. I believe you have to click with the mouse and hit the control key or something then save the file. Do a web search. Here they are (you can find more in avic411.com):

Very cool install, and great display images! I think that's the best aftermerket setup (appearance-wise) that I've seen in a Touareg. The mount kit looks a lot less hack-n-stick than many I've seen.

On a Mac, to save the files posted above, hold the control key and click on the image to bring up the menu. You can save or download the image, depending on which browser you are using.

Xtant,
I think Matt was referring to the fact that the Pioneer is customizable. You can upload customized screen (Wallpaper, Splash and Navigation Wallpaper) and the buttons have customizable colors at the push of a button, eight stock colors and custom color blends.

Grant,
Yes, I believce the PACSWIPS & Can BUS will work with the 04 and up touareg. Go HERE to the pac-audio website and see the product description.

The whole thing looks great, but I actually was referring to the mounting kit. It may just be the photos, but it looks like the one pictured above has the same "soft touch" appearance that the rest of the dash/buttons have. The others I've seen, if I'm remembering correctly, look a bit more on the shiny side. Maybe it was a past custom job someone did. Who knows.

Also, I don't follow this stuff very closely, otherwise I'd have probably known there's only one kit. My bad...

By the way, no assness was taken. Thanks for setting the record straight :D

Hello - I'm looking to have the AVIC-D3 installed. Does anyone have a full list, estimated cost, and location of getting everything I need to get this done.

I want the AVIC-D3
Bluetooth adapter
Steering wheel button functionality.

Do you need a faceplate/cover for the avic-d3 since it is smaller than the opening or does it come with the d3?

Do you need something to connect to the speedometer? I've heard from some people you do and some you don't?

Please let me know asap and any and all information on where to purchase these items would be helpful... thanks!

you can hude the tuner wherever you want. under a seat or in the dash somewhere. it definately wont fit behind the radio. there isnt any room back there. yo uwill controll it with the d3 so you never have to see it. you will need to mount the antenna , that you will see. most common place is the roof, but some people put them on the dash.

I just got the D3 installed and it looks and works great!

However, I lost the upper 1/3 of my MFI and "Radio" does not showup in the MFI choices. I have vol up and down working which is great but I would also like to change between XM/Ipod/Radio using the stearing wheel controls.

Did anyone else with the D3 run into the same issue?

Thanks!

Just got mine back from having the D3 installed and I am also missing the top 1/3 of my MFI, also the miles/gallon readings no longer work.
Has anyone any idea if it's possible to get these items to work.

Very nice Brian! That's a great set-up. Where'd you source your parts?

Ching,

I paid the guy about $60/hour for like 3 hours labor.

I had them install the D3, Bluetooth, iPod adapter (in glove box). They also installed the PAC-SWIPS and PAC-BUS to retain steering wheel controls.

The steering wheel controls are great and also has a ACC switch for your D3. The D3 will stay on as long as they key is in the ignition, just like the OEM stereo.

I bought the D3, ipod and bluetooth and the PAC SWIPS on Amazon the supplier was Discountjungle. I bought PAC-BUS and double DIN dash kit by metra from ebay (member id Audiosavings). I bought the antenna adapter from crutchfield.
I looked around a lot and basically bought the pieces from whoever had it at the best price. The Metra kit from Ebay was like half the price as other places. Also, Audiosavings combined shipping costs and saved money that way.

Don't let your installer forget to install the illumination wire (common occurance from reading other threads) w/out the illum wire it wont go into night mode and it's like having a flashlight in your face at night!

If you have any other questions, let me know. Have you looked at www.avic411.com. It's a great resource for avic questions.

AVIC-D3 in an 04 Touareg

I just spoke with PAC. They told me that due to can bus differences not only does there SW-CAN not work in an 04 but that the AVIC-D3 will not work at all due to no integration with the CAN bus. Does anyone know if this is true?

Cheers...Doug

I'm sure they know what their hardware is compatible with, but just because you can't connect the CAN bus doesn't mean your D3 won't function. The only thing I can foresee happening is the loss of steering wheel controls and an inability to connect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). As long as you find an alternate switched 12V power source, the D3 will work.
As a side note, I don’t have the VSS connected and my GPS units works great.

Brian thank you for the reply. I did find someone at VWvortex who installed a D3 in 04. No SWICS control seems to be the only downside. My quandary is that I can but the OEM CD nav for about the same as a D3 and have full integration but I think the PIO unit is a much better performer. Thoughts?
