Passenger Headlight Trouble??--Tried Everything!

Ok,
So I am having issues with my passenger headlight on my 2004 Touareg. I have HID lights on it, and it went out about a month ago. My first thought was that the light was bad. So I replaced it, and it didn't work. So my next thought was that possibly the ballast went bad. SO...I bought a ballast.

That didn't work, and I even tried to swap the good ballast from the driver side headlight, and that didn't work.

I checked all the wires, and everything seems to be good. The only thing that I noticed was that the 12-prong connector in the housing was missing one of the gold pieces inside it. IF that is the issue, does anyone know the part number or even what the official name of that part would be.

Or if anyone has had these issues before, any info would be helpful.

Thanks guys!

If you truly have HIDS the highbeams and low are all the same light. The inner lights close to the grill on your 04 are just flash to pass high beams, not your actual high beams.

The HIDS or as we call them Xenons are just one bulb. Hi and low in the same light. Intensity does not actually change and it is just a shutter that fully opens to give you all the light when you switch to Hi. When you have Xenons on the early Tregs with the four lights up front the inners are just flash to pass high beams, not your actual high beams. If you just have halogen bulbs then the inners are your highs while outer were the low. Only way to get the inner passing highs to come on with the outer high on Xenon equipped cars was to VAG them to do such.

I had this problem during this summer.
My passenger side headlight assembly is always full of fogs during hot weather, eventually became water and so forth.
I had this problem from the beginning, so 2005.
Went to VW dealer two times to inquire, they all told me that no problem.
Given it's full 8 years now, which is 1 years more than "supposedly the life of Touareg", I consider this gave me enough life.

Anyway, one day, HID went bad. The only thing that didn't work was HID. Went to VW dealer, they told me they have to replace headlight assembly, and quoted about $900. No way, I took it apart, and while headlight assembly had some rust, nothing major damage was done. So I replaced both ballast and cable (I replaced the cable only because when I took it apart, it was soaked) and now it's okay.

Sounds like you have same problem. If the other 3 lights are okay, there is no reason why new ballast is not going to work. It's simple connection. HID - connector - ballast. (other lights are same, other lights - cable - ballast). While I searched this, I found that there could be bad ballast out there if I buy from less reputable retailers.

My ballast and cable are from Amazon. Chose amazon, because of easy returns.

One last thing to check is in fact a fuse. I knew this to begin the repair by myself.

I also replaced hid to check if this is going to fix the problem. But I checked the fuse anyway. With bad ballast, a new fuse became obsolete immediately. So the old fuse that I had was bad when I started the repair. So, make sure to check the fuse. Blue one, I think.

Hm... that is strange, because you have 2004 touareg, and up until now, didn't you have to replace bulb at least once, both side? The reason why I ask is that in my case, bulb light on is not same as bulb out. It gave me some time to replace. So with light on, I was able to drive with light on for a while. The bulb was less bright, if I remember correctly.

Replaced bulbs two times (driver and passenger), and same things happened. Bulb light on, but bulb working. Slightly less bright.

My post above, maybe a month before that happened, my light was on from time to time, so I knew the time to replace bulb would come soon. And one day, it was out, and that was because of broken ballast.

But in case I am mistaken, please correct me if I am wrong.

Get a bulb from amazon, it's only $40 something, and in my case, it was very easy to replace. Unless you are stuck in first step.

I've seen a similar issue.

Could be as simple as a bad connection.
Stand outside and pound on it a bit with your fist to see if it comes on.

You can also easily unseat the connectors inside the Touareg and pull them out a little bit so that you can test the passenger side assembly on the driver's side and vice versa.
This is a fast and effective test that is much easier than pulling apart and replacing the ballasts.

If a bad connection is the case cleaning the connectors and possibly a delicate application of conductive grease could cure the issue.

I'm not sure about the connector missing a part, is the other light missing it also?

Jim Ellis VW parts has all the diagrams on their site, helpful to find parts once you can locate the right assembly.

Used, 2 and a half years old. But as I said, other touaregs have the same option here. At least the ones I saw. Again, maybe it is a EU vs NA market thing..

Hi, i have the same problem as more_porage here.

My right d1s headligth does not work.

I have replaced the d1s bulb, switch the cable form the left headligth and also tried the Left side ballast on the right side, and steel it does not working..

Any sugestions?

Is there different fuse form the left and right side? if so, where are they?
