Recently my '04 Treg has blared a hand brake warning light and alarm at me. The brake has NOT been set, yet the warning goes off intermittently.
If I pull the brake release it goes away...maybe. Maybe comes back.
I assume the sensor is bad and needs to be replaced.
Any assistance as to where it is and how to get at it would be appreciated.
TIA

No it is not.

First you need to check now many clicks it takes to to set the parking brake.

More than 8? Then adjust the parking brakes shoes in the rear drums.

Still more than eight? Then inspect/replace the shoes and de-rust the drums whilst you are at it.

Still more than 8? Then adjust the cable - the adjuster is inside the car at the bottom of and at the back of the centre console.

Still more than 8? Only then, having done the foregoing, should you need to replace the parking brake pedal cylinder.

A weak return cylinder in the interior parking brake handle / mechanism is a know defect in the early models. I have linked to some good info. There may even be a tsb about it somewhere.

Indeed, but you should still do the job properly by starting with the brake shoes, then the cable and then the piston if it is needed. In most cases it is not required after doing the correct adjustments first.

While I believe here COULD be more to this, in the absence of other issues with the parking brake use, then it's the little support strut at the pedal which ceases to function properly, allowing the pedal to slack into the sensor and causes an alarm. Replacement of the small shock absorber like strut will cure this issue. I've been thru this and the parking brake has always been just fine otherwise. It is a simple in cabin fix plus part, about $40?
