What are the most likely suspects?
New VW Gas Cap
Small vacuum hoses under hood look good. No cracks and tight fit on all ends I can easily get to.
Has not had VW Gas Tank Recall done, but did get new fuel pumps a couple of years back.
(I didn't do them, so can't say how good a job sealing the system)

I have read a lot about the N80 purge valve on other Audi/VW systems. Is this the valve at the back-top on the left side of the intake?
If so, can I run known good a hose from it to a generic vacuum canister as a test? (Are there sensors or valves in the vacuum canisters that I need to be concerned with?

Can I close off the vacuum line running back to the tank as a test?
Where does it measure the tank vacuum to trip the error?

I have also on occasion received a P0442/16826 code. (This was the code with the old gas cap)
Does this help track down the problem.

Thanks, lots of good background, (A bunch I knew but a few tidbits)

Does anyone have an easy reference to WHERE on the 4.2 Touareg that parts are? The little chart in et radiator shroud shows two vacuum reserves, but not where they are. Guessing under each fender, but would prefer not to open up the fender liners, if the greater wisdom of the forum says that is never/rarely the problem.
Also, where did they decide to hide the charcoal canister?

I can test the purge valve (since there are lots of references to it failing on all sorts of VWs) and hope it is bad.

Does anyone actually know the difference between the P0456/16840 Small Evap Leak and the P0442/16826 Small Evap Leak codes, as that might help.

I am sure my issue is not unique, and a bunch of other 04/05 guys have had and fixed the problem, hopefully without shot-gunning parts.

So here is where I am.
Found the difference between P0442 and P0456, 442 is Small Evap Leak and 456 id Very Small Evap Leak.
At least I am moving in the right direction.
So far most every thin vacuum hose I can find under the hood looks good and seems tight.
One was a little loose feeling so I put clamps on it.
Found the Purge valve and the disconnect at the firewall seemed to not feel real snug, so I put some O-ring Lubricant on the mating surfaces.
Found a reference that eh charcoal canister is under the right fender, so I will be checking it for obvious leaks this weekend.
If I don't find anything I will probably hold off till I get the Gas Tank recall done.

I did see a Evap smoke tester for under $100. Has anyone had luck with that for small (very small) leaks?
