I just replaced my 2014 TDI oil cooler due to oil and coolant leaks. The maintenance went well (though tedious) and has solved the leaks. After the work I got the P0405 code. I'm able to erase the code with the engine running and it does not return until after I shut it down and restart it. It has also cleared twice on its own in the past two days. I understand that the cooler maintenance disturbed a whole group of EGR related components. I've checked all of the connectors and found now obvious problems.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Any recommended course of action?

You should have 5 volts between pins 3 and 1. The voltage on pin 5 should vary with EGR valve position.

The EGR valve should move between its limits when you turn the ignition on.
It might be worth double checking the connector. Maybe a socket has been pushed back into the body of the connector.

Another thought... Did you remove the plastic housing of the EGR valve during the cooler maintenance?
If it wasn't repositioned correctly the sensor readings could be off.

Problem Solved! Thanks guys for the help.
When going to do the pin-to-pin voltage check, I discover that SOMEONE had missed reconnecting the EGR Valve connector. Well , I guess that I now have confirmed that the error checking system works. I have had a stern conversation with SOMEONE and he assures me that he never will be so careless EVER again. (He's told me that for over 70 years! 🙂).
Thanks Again All.

Well that was a heck of a good find
