Oil temperature and engine health

Hi,

In an effort to keep alive a V10 Touareg, and patch it, I need some feedback from other owners.

Did a trip to the mountains a few days ago, and the engine oil temperature went up to about 115 C (or just under 120C), I own this car for 7 years now and never saw it go that high. The road was a mountain pass from 1000m to 1900m with a lot of serpentine roads, not easy. I did other mountain passes before and the temperature never went that high before. (water temperature never moved from 90C)
Before the trip, I did an oil change, and used for the first time 0W30 VW Longlife III FE.

1. Is it normal for the temperature to go up so much with that high load?
2. I unpacked the filter when I did the oil change and found a few flakes of metal in the paper, none in oil, is this normal wear for a 290.000 km engine or the rod bearings are on the way out? (pictures below)
3. I seem to notice more often a whine when letting off the power, when coasting. Since I've got the car, the gear box is making a rumbling noise when the car is stopped but only in drive or reverse, I've never got a clear answer if it is ok, some mechanics say it is the torque convertor and the oil moving through it, some say the gear box is busted. Did an oil change a year ago, nothing major found on the magnet, some black goo. Should I prepare for a gear box swap? Plenty available for cheap from scarped cars.

4 and final. I'm in a long battle with the oil sensor, original one is giving me check oil every other day, reset by opening the hood, tried new - not working no temp and error, tried 2 used - one no temp, one no comm, got another used original VW Hella - check oil is constant, can't reset it. (the oil lever, for those wondering, is ok on the dip stick). Probably going to try again with new HELLA 6PR 008 079-081, but I hate taking out the oil again. Any ideas why nothing works, the hood latch? (opened or closed is displayed normally on the dash).

Any feedback is welcomed!

I would say that oil temperature is quite normal for that driving you encountered.

Is the oil you’ve noted the correct VW specification compliant? If you have DPFs, must be 507.00 and I think 506:00 for non DPF V10s.
It's 504.00 - 507.00, and I have DPFs, the original spec was 5W30, but I've seen that VW replaced it with 0W30.

Check oil level doesn't generate a DTC, the only thing I found is in Instruments (17) - In data stream there is a field with oil level - OK or Not OK, only a no comm scenario generates a DTC, and I discarded that sensor sometime ago. Replacing or switching means removing the oil, I didn't try the trick with the vacuum cleaner on the oil cap yet.
