Hi all, have just had 30,000k service completed on V6 TDI Touareg and new service sticker on windscreen states next oil change at 37,500 ks. I was under the impression that oil changes are every 15,000? What is the point of a change at every 7500 using the super duper synthetic oil and no filter? Or is this a new money grabbing venture by the service departments? would appreciate some advice from people in the know
...... regards Ric

You are right there Ric,
15,000km between oil changes, this is noted in your service manual and recommended by VW worldwide. If your dealer is quoting 7,500km changes then you will need to question what oil they are using in the vehicle.

I'm pretty sure my manual states 16,000 kms. No? (manual is in the car and I'm about to go to bed) :p

hanson,
If Albany is in NY, why are you talking in kms?
Hey Pazzo, I know it was late and you were going to bed, but you've wandered into the Australian section and the Albany in Hanson's signature is next to the "WA" which is Western Australia. Here we've talked in km since the early '70s.....
..And our manuals show a "service interval" of 30,000km and oil change interval of 15,000. No hint of 7500 at all!!

cheers,

..Neil

The oil in my V10 gets changed every 7 500km. Interesting that they charged $134.32 (oil) in April for the 22 500km service and $202.95 (oil) for the 30 000km service in July! The latter is specified on the account as: MOBIL 1 ESP 5W30. I suppose I can't complain, as the price of the sump plug was 59 cents cheaper on the 30k service (5.09 vs 5.68) - what a bargain! Is this oil price about what the rest of you guys pay (excluding DIY'ers). Cheers

Reason I change every 7500km: on page 6 of service booklet (and I quote): "Diesel fuel in some markets has a high sulpher content. An oil change interval of 7500km (bold in text) applies for vehicles using this diesel fuel. This may also be required for vehicles operating under severe driving conditions". This oil change interval was recommended by VW in Perth. I would love to hear the merits of this from those "in the know". Does oz-diesel have a high sulpher content? Werner

I change oil & filter every 15-20 thousand or 12 months, whichever comes first. Only use SLX longlife III which costs around $220.00

Only fill up with BP Ultimate which conforms to Euro 5 standard.

You guys in the city are lucky - you have choice. I am 165km east of Perth and have to make the V10 drink what we have!

Over here, you can get 500ppm LSD or 50ppm ULSD. The ULSD is not readily available all over the country and even in the major metropolitan areas, there are far more 500ppm pumps than 50ppm pumps. In my experience, very few dealers educate potential or current customers on the differences in the two fuels, probably due to their own ignorance.

When Tom, Dick and Harry stops at the filling station, they fill up with 500ppm, because it's 20c a liter cheaper than the 50ppm stuff.

In spite of this, VWSA still says all the diesel vehicles sold in this country, including the V10 TDi and the new common rail V6 TDi, has service intervals of 15,000km.

IMO, if you use 50ppm diesel and you don't operate "under severe driving conditions" whatever that might be, and you use 507.00, you can change the oil every 15,000km.

Severe driving conditions are more likely to be 5km trips around town than your Lesotho sojourn, but your Namib adventure would probably qualify as severe due to throttle openings used in the sand.

I have received an answer from the VW service dept (eventually) they stated that some people like to change the oil every 6 months which equates to approx 7500ks, that is the reason they put the sticker on with oil change 7500k,s ....... duhhhhhh
what can I say? regards for all the info you fellas have contributed ..... hanson

Just asked the question about 7500km firts service at VW. The answer was they( VW) prefer me to have it for the first few services at 7500km intervals so they can monitor the car and oil usages. It is believed that we as motorist are not checking our oil regularly enough and the dealers have concerns about the trend of the T reg to use oil in the early part of there lives. They did say that they do change the filter as well. Think you can read what you like into this?

What a load of CR@P !!!! Your stealer is only after your $$$.

I've NEVER heard of Tregs using more oil in the early parts of their lives, and ALL Tregs have a low oil level warning message in the MFI. If you're not doing some extreme off roading or serious towing, you don't need to check your oil level EVER. The car will warn you if it starts getting low.

My R5 uses about 1litre in 15,000km. I keep a spare bottle of Castrol SLX 505.01 in the boot and fill it up when the warning sounds, or (if required) just before an off-road trip or long distance journey.

Manual clearly states service interval is 30,000km, with oil change at 15k. 7500 is only for extreme conditions and dealer $$$$$.
Ignore them and check your oil level at 7500 for free!

I even went a check the manuals for my sons Hyundia Getz it also says to change oil at 15000km but the labels on the screen want it back at 7500km. Must agree with you it seems it is for the $$$$ and not much else.

I am - seems to provide a little more power, little less smoke and slightly improved economy (I have a spreadsheet recording economy since new also noting type of fuel used - very anal i know) engine is still running in with only 38.5k on the clock. Economy was actually better in the beginning with the original oem tyres road biased Pirelli P Rosso now Pirelli ATR's. The price is about 4 to 5 cents more compared to the cheap United pump down the road from the Caltex.
