Nitto has recently come out with an Off-road tire (Nitto Terra Grappler) that will fit 18" and 17" wheels. I am assuming the 18" application ( 255/55R-18 109S BLK) will fit the stock touareg with the 18's with no rubbing. I am lookin into grabbing a set for myself.

I am a dealer and can get the tires at a discount. Let me know if anyone is interested in them. They retail for $153 each for the 18" application, but I can knock that down a bit for you T-reg owners :) Let me know: trentbroberg@hotmail.com

they are available in:
18" wheels: 255/55R-18 109S BLK $150ish :-$
17" wheels: P265/70R-17 113S B $115ish

Treadwear: 500
Traction: A
Temperature: B
Speed Rating: SR

About the Terra Grappler AT
The Terra Grappler A/T is Nitto's first light truck/sport utility tire to be offered in D- and E- load ratings.
An aggressive tread pattern with high-density siping provides excellent traction and handling in snow and slush.
Two steel belts ensure optimum contact patch both on and off the road.
Two spiral wound nylon cap plies enhance high-speed stability.

It's very hard to get Off Road or All Terain tyres for the 17"s here in Australia....I have had to settle for a set of Cooper Discover HT's in a 245/65/R17 size. Speedo is spot-on with this size.

I sent an email off to VW here in Aust, in regards to 16" rims, and they said that VW did not have a rim to suit. :censored:

Nittos Suck!

I recently purchased a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers and proceeded to pinch flat the right front on a very mellow trail. I've been off-roading for seven years now, have taken courses, and been an active member in a club...I lowered the pressure to 15psi and drove slowly in low-range...a fairly sharp rock made quick work of the Nittos... :chainsaw:
Discount Tire claimed the Nitto's had a decent sidewall, possibly as strong as the three-ply in the BFG All-Terrains...NOT SO!!!

After 3K, it is obvious that the WEAK LINK(s) on the Treg are the TIRE and WHEELS...I'm now possessed in finding a simple, smaller steel wheel that I can put BFG All-Terrains on...somehow...

Keep in mind that a 16" wheel will not fit on the Touareg due to the large brakes. So you are limited to a 17" wheel, which in turn limits you to tires that will actually fit the Touareg, which is not the BFG's.

Nitto's Redemption?

Just got back from the South Colony Lakes trail outside of Westcliffe on the way to Crestone Peak and Crestone Needles. I deflated the Nitto's and drove a bit slower...they worked fined this time over some decent Grade 3/4 obstacles.

Are you using the NITO's on the T? What size are they?

Nitto Terra Grapplers stock size for the V8...I believe 255/55/18s...they got the job done off-road when significantly deflated to around 10-15psi and complete use of engine braking + extremely low speeds...still worried about their ability to hold up with such a weak sidewall...what can we do to get a smaller wheel for BFGs!!! I'm thinking of even having the brake calipers changed to the V6 size or begging BF Goodrich repeatedly to produce a 265. Keep in touch about the Colorado trip...

The V6 and the V8 have the same brake rotor sizes. No go there.

On a side note, I just had the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's (265/65/17) installed on my vehicle today. It sit a little higher. Can't say ANYTHING about driving performance or offroad ability yet. It's raining pretty good here and didn't want to push new tires in the corners and find myself in the guard rail.

I'll post some pictures later in one of my other threads.

Mine were from TireRack. I don't recall them making ANY Dueler's that at 18". I would recommend the NITOs if you are intent on staying with the 18" tire size.

As for the rack, it is on off brand I bought at Sports Rack. It was a Bauer Vehicle Gear rack and cost about $200. I originally bought it for my VW Bus rack. I am currently using my wife's Thule cross bars from her Jetta. All I needed to do was get a different tower and base for the cross bars.

The factory racks are sitting unused in the garage. You can see some closeup pictures on my website:
