OEM Spare Wheel Carrier

Few questions to the owners of T-rex equipped with OEM Spare Wheel Carrier (if possible T2/facelift if there is a single one here):

1. Does it open manually or is power assisted? I mean like Power Tail Gate: I press the opening button and it electrically opens. Or is it just hydrolic strut?
2. Does it work with Power Tail Gate? I mean does it block the tail gate from opening when the carrier is closed, e.g. I press the remote or button on the doors and the tail gate will not open (or worse, break sth).
3. Does the wheel block the window from opening fully? From the picture I saw it looks like it does, but I wonder if it is also electrically block it from unlocking, e.g. I push the switch and it will not open.

1) It manually opens... Just a hydrolic strut.

2) It does block the tail gate when carrieer is closed... with oem spare tire there was no option for autotailgate.

3) Yes it does block the window. If the push the switch the window with still open afew cm but you must move the spare to make any real use of it.

Just to make sure: if you use the remote or a door switch to open the tail gate with the carrier closed, nothing happens, right?

with oem spare tire there was no option for autotailgate.
This is actually bad news... I have to take a look if it is possible at all to have both.

Excellent, thank you so much. You do not have a VCDS scan from that '09 w/oem spare carrier by any chance?

maloosheck, if you go to 1stVWparts.com and search the spare tire components, it list stuff for both manual and electric assist. How this all breaks down I have no idea, but I was there a few days ago looking for something else and ran across that. Big question is who is gonna order in all the parts you need to accomplish this. I believe another member mentioned once the mounting holes appear to be there in all the Tregs since they had the rear bumper cover removed for another project, but I am guessing this is going to be a costly mod given everything you will need including a new rear hatch.

Can you give me a bit more details how to get to these components?

That should be true. The carrier is attached directly to the chassis and there is no way VW would decide to make two different chassis for vehicles with and without wheel carrier.

Well, let's say I have a chance to buy most (if not all) parts required for this mod at a reasonable price. It is coming from '06 T1, so I have to figure out if it will work with my T2 (shape of bumpers and tailgate) and if it will work with power tail gate (electrically wise).

That's right if you use the remote nothing happens (you can't get to the door switch with the carrier closed).

I was pretty disappointed about no auto tailgate with spare carrier too... can't have it all I suppose.

Also there was no option for the rear camera with the oem carrier because the carrier blocks the default camera location. I think someone else here mounted an aftermarket one onto the licence plate holder though. You could also mount the camera in the rear wing (like in G wagon) but this won't give you vision of the towball.

I was referring to the switch located in driver's door next to the fuel flap release button. Is it just NAR feature or ROW as well?

I am aware of this limitation. But I have added Tiguan RVC to my Jetta, even though VW did not provide for such option, so I am pretty sure I will find a way to relocate the Touareg camera.

While looking through ETKA I came across the details of the OEM internal spare wheel holder/carrier that is mounted in the luggage compartment of 7P Touaregs.

This is something I have not come across on this forum or seen images of, so don't know of the costing or availability but I found it interesting that VW developed this in the first place.

Good find, thanks.

As you I did not know or saw that an internal wheel carrier was ever available.
If one ever came up for sale I would be tempted, love to see a pic of it actually fitted in a series one vehicle.

It sounds like a $100 amazon fold down hitch carrier is actually better than this elusive OEM carrier.... because I can still operate the upper glass window without moving it, so in practice rarely need to swing it down. 90% of the time I prefer using just the glass window as it's faster, easier, and all the junk doesn't fall on the ground.
