Noisy/rubbing windshield wipers

Granted, the Touareg's wipers are big and floppy, but I'd like to know
if there is a fix to the rubbing and loud noise they make on mine.
I've had them replaced 3x to no avail. Problem is mainly on the driver's side wiper and rubbing occurs toward the end of the stroke. You can even
see little check marks left on the windshield where it rubs. Cleaning the windshield and wipers does not help.

I've heard about PIAA's silicone wipers.
Anybody know if these would help or any tips?

Doesn't sound normal to me. Likely isn't the wiper blades. Maybe the arms are not aligned or bent? Maybe the windshield is actually deformed?

Cleaning with a household glass cleaner is not the best way to take care of this problem. It only tends to increase the possibility of skipping, as the window is now so clean, that there is a high amount of friction.

I've been using the washer fluid with the Rain X additive for years. It not only works well in the rain, but will eliminate/lessen and wiper skip as well as allow ice to be removed more easily so you're not chopping at it and potentially scratching the windshield.

It’s much easier than applying the Rain X from the bottle as well.

I would agree that the ‘Reg wipers are a bit lame, especially in the NE winters. I had asked the dealer if there were winter blades available. At the time, there wasn’t. I’m sure after market blades are or will be available. I’ll replace mine before the winter sets in.

Wiz,
I have this issue after using the wipers for a while. Seems to be related to road film gathering at the top of the wipe. You can even see the junk building up there. Perhaps the wipers are so good that they scrape everything off the windshield and deposit it up there. When I wash my car I just make sure I wash the windshield very well and I do it three times. seems to clean the stuff off for a while.

I've also found that scrubbing the wiper blades themselves with a grease-cutting dish detergant (such as Dawn) helps maintain the blades very well. I typically do this when I wash the car, or more often when it's been particularly rainy or nasty weather.

Re: Rubbing wipers

I had this problem on the driver's side (U.S.) when my 04 V10 encountered it's first rainstorm w/ less than 1000 miles on it. But after 2 hrs it went away and hasn't returned since in that storm or others. So it appears to be a function of residue on the windshield or rubber insert, or flexibility or edge characteristics of the rubber insert, rather than design. Only GM can screw a design as basic as wipers.

I've had my 'Reg since March 04 and haven't experienced that problem to date. But we also have a '02 Passat and that has been a consistent problem we've experienced and have yet to remedy. Not sure if this is something chronic with VWs but it is definitely annoying.

I have the same problem with my wipers. Drivers side at the end of the stroke. I found out that the problem isn't with the blades, but twith the plastic housing around the windshield. Mine has popped loose and needed to be snapped back into place snug with the glass. Hope this solves your problem.

The wiper on the drivers side of my '04 drags and screams no matter how I clean it, no matter how hard it is raining, no matter what speed the wipers are going. The dealership has adjusted the arm 4X's to no avail. My parents were in over the Holidays and we rode 70 miles in my $50,000.00 vehicle in the rain listening to the wiper scream louder than we could speak. I couldn't see if I turned them off so we just suffered. Needless to say we arrived home with headaches and bad dispositions!

In general, the problem is road film building up on the windshield. Try cleaning the windshield with a strong window cleaner and #0000 steel wool. Then clean the wiper blades well with isopropyl alcohol.

Thanks for the info. I don't want to sound ungreatful for the help but my left wiper blade has skipped and screeched over the windshield since it was new (no dirt build up). I had the windshield replaced this month (due to a crack) again no dirt or film, I thought maybe the problem would stop with the new glass (maybe the original was warped or something) but it didn't. I have cleaned the blades and the glass as suggested & it helps for a VERY short time only. My question is should we have to buy special cleaners & go through this special cleaning routine every few days? I wash my t-reg twice a week by hand & it's kept inside - dirt is not an issue. I've owned many vehicles and I have never had a wiper make so much noise that you can not carry on a conversation inside the vehicle. Also, if the problem is dirt, why is it that everyone only has the noise from the left wiper blade wouldn't the right side be equally dirty and make noise as well? Don't get me wrong, I love my t-reg I just want VW to solve the problems. If manufacturers of vehicles in all price ranges can provide wiper blades that don't scream and skip then VW should be able to as well.

Yes, I have reported it and they have adjusted the arm three times but it has not solved the problem. They have not changed the blades but as the problem existed when the vehicle was brand new they don't feel the blades are an issue.
I've just come from the dealer and I am not pleased at all due to the fact that after I gave them my wish list (as in wish these could be repaired) of "bugs", they told me that I would need to leave my vehicle but VW has changed their rental car policy so that dealers can no longer offer a rental unless the vehicle has to be kept for more than 24 hours and they didn't think the repairs would take that long. I of course could pay for the rental at $39.99 if I so desired. I am so frustrated!!!!! VW told me not to drive the vehicle with the running gear workshop light on but they can not provide me transportation while it is repaired. And for this I paid how much?????? Sorry, I'm venting.

There are two, no three main issues in this case. First and worst, bad design. Second wrong blade angle caused by bent wiper arm. And third, stucking wiper arm hinge assisted with too weak springload. The latter two are adjustable/fixable.

If it makes You feel any better, Cayenne is similar squeaker because it shares the parts.
It is frustrating that this problem has not been solved in -08 facelift T-reg, it should have been!

I had the same problem with my 04 jetta tDI the wipers made that same noise from day one, and they were regular wipers. I thought I had it beat when traded it in on our new-to -us 04 T V6. Same sqeak, different vehicle. I use the rainX so at highway speeds i don't have to use the wipers so much, thus reducing the amount of racket.

I recently tried Spray Silicone on the wipers, a good dose, took them off first. Almost eliminated the noisy skipping wipers.
