no sound coming from my speakers

Hi everyone!

Just bought a used 2004 v8 Touareg and I absolutely love it...

EXCEPT - Nothing comes out of my speakers! It is used, I bought it from another state and had it shipped (but through reading all of your discussions I was able to see that I've got all the up to date servicing on the car).

Somehow the assholes at this dealership thought I didn't really need to be told that the speakers don't work and that there is no disc changer cd cartridge in the back, nor is there the nav cd in order to deem my navigation operable... Ridiculous right?

Here is what I know and where I am at:
-The radio and all its functions work fine without a problem (still haven't figured out the phone thing and I'm pissed my iphone won't work with the ipod jack)

-I checked the fuses for the radio and everything seems fine for the fuses relating to the radio/nav (but there are no fuses for just the speakers).

-I also noticed when checking the fuses that I have a few missing on the right fuse box!? WTF? is that normal? The feature in the car that relates to those fuses seem to work fine but I guess I should test it more to be sure.

I listened to someone else previously and tried banging on it but of course that didn't work and I didn't want to do it too hard in fear of breaking my nav screen (I didn't hit it just the top and around parts of the radio).

So what's the problem guys? Any suggestions? I don't want to have to pay for all new speakers or service repair if there is a DIY suggestion to troubleshoot further.

Thanks everyone!

If you are in need, I have a spare CD changer cartridge, and all the NAV CD's (however version 1) Pm if you need. When I bought my Touareg used I was missing a couple fuses in the under hood box, seems the temp sensor was gone, and the dealer thought he could just pull the fan fuses so it wouldn't stay on and kill my battery. It worked all winter until it warmed up and I was getting an overheat message at idle and did some investigation. Id start with the fuses. Try to get someone to do a VAG scan, or bite it and go to the dealership for a scan. If an amp or otherwise if blown it'll tell you. Good luck!

Have you tried to set any radio stations? Autoscan? I ask because when doing that you should hear a beep. That'll at least indicate if your problem is the speakers or if there's a setting not correct. If you push the button with the music note on it the audio setting screen should show. This is where you set the bass, treble, balance and fader. I'm pretty sure there's also an audio off selection too. If you haven't you might want to fiddle with setting on that screen to see if there's life in the system. If you have an amp system (some did, some didn't depending on options) and there's a chance you need to replace it, ECS Tuning was selling replacements at deep discounts. If you have an amp it'll be mounted directly above the rear CD changer.

I've tried the autoscan option and I've made sure the radio is turned on. I'm thinking I will just have to get the new amp. I sure hope it works though. I'd like to not blow $100 or more bucks for something that doesn't solve the problem.

Surprising is that taking out the amp and turning the car on caused some unusual issues. For one, it caused the air suspension to have some odd error and that there was a downhill breaking issue. But they all went away when I plugged it back in. Just need to wait till I get the new one.

Anyone know if I can use an improved amp without changing the wires?

I just ordered one from a dealership near bye and it was only 36 after taxes. I was happy with that. Should be here Friday.

The dealership I bought the car from wants me to take it in to a dealer to let them look at it. The cost to just inspect is going to be from $55-95 depending on how long it takes them to figure it out. I told them to start with the amp.

****ty part is that they want ME to pay for it first then my dealership will reimburse me for the costs... I am actually going to postpone the service visit till after I try to plug in the new one.

I'll plug it in, see if it works, and if not, I'll sell it back on ebay and take the car in to find out what the deal is.

My only concern is that the amps that I see on the diagram at the dealer doesn't look like the one I currently have and need to replace. They verified it with my VIN as the correct model but I see them for like 100 bucks online and I'm worried I ordered the wrong one. WISH ME LUCK!

UPDATE:

SO dumb me, when the amp comes today I go to pick it up and think it is the wrong model. I realize that what I thought was the amp really wasn't the amp and that it was in fact, above the disc changer.

So I borrowed a screw driver, opened the back up and popped it in. Of course, it worked like a charm.

Great thing is that I had to come to work early today so when I went to the dealership this morning, they said they couldn't finish in time for me to get to work so I rescheduled. Thankfully so because I already knew what the problem was, fixed it, and now don't need to go back or shell out more money and wait to be reimbursed.

Yay for a kick ass working speaker system. I now fully love my car and will even more when I get the disc changer cartridge and a new nav cd.

It turned out it was the amp actually

They are super cheap though. Like 35 bucks. I was able to pull off the panels in the back and replace it super easily. It IS above and to the left of the cd changer.

But i found out the cd changer has no power going to it either so I'll need to take care of that as well.... *sigh*.

What if you only have one plug?

I have a 2004 v8 Treg and just ran into the same issue and was desperate to avoid removing all the plastic panels to get to the amp, so I tried removing the fuse for the amplifier for 30 seconds with the radio on like above, plugged it back in and the speakers started working! The fuse is number 12 on the passenger (right) side of the car and next to the fuse for the radio. There's a good online diagram at fusesdiagram.com that helped me.
