Its been a while since our last gtg and many new members have joined so its time to meet again and head out for bit of adventure in the aussie wilderness, not to mention enjoy some of the Touareg offroad ability.
On the weekend I did some night time fourwheel driving around the kowmung fire trail(blue mountains NP), parts of which we did during our clubmeet a few years ago, and I must say that it is still quite an interesting track & area.
We can meetup at Jenolan Caves and then head out to Kanangra Walls on the dirt track and check out the awesome drop/view of the valley & high cliff walls. From there we'll slip into low range and head down to the kowmung river and come up the mountains on the other side. The last leg will see us back on the track out to Wombeyan Caves and then out to Mittagong.
The limeburners trail unfortunately is now closed but the earlier sections will give most enough excitement n adrenalin. Yerranderie the ghost town is an interesting area closeby but unless you plan to stay there we wont have enough time.

If we do it on a Saturday and there is some interest then we can stay a night at Wombeyan Caves, otherwise drive back to Sydney, etc from there on the same day.

Now who's up and when? Mid Feb? weekend of 13/14 or 20/21?

I'd be up for it. I do have a trip to Phillip Is planned in Feb on the Bike, I think it is after the 21 st in which case I think my son and I would be in.

That's great to know, we have 5 Touaregs already and more to come. I'll confirm VW Australia availability & post details & pictures of this trip soon.
In a nutshell we'll meet up at Jenolan Caves in the morning for a cuppa, then head to Kanangra Walls and then fourwheel drive all the way to Wombeyan Caves that day. There we'll have a choice to camp or rent a cabin or if most dont feel like staying the night, head back home via Mittagong.

ASC TDI, which Touareg do you own?

ASC TDI, which Touareg do you own?
Hi Singh,

I own a 09 V6 TDI with the optional Mountain 20" rims(275/40/20... due the the RTA's ruling that the diameter can only vary 15mm I cant move down from my 20" to 17's.... currently the diameter is 728mm, but when i look at 265/65/17's the diameter is 776 - a delta of 48mm...

looking at Tire Size Calculator - tire & wheel plus sizing the ony set of tyres I could get are 235/60/17's 713mm. But this i have the issue of the wheel not fitting due the the bigger brakes for the original 20's.

the only thing i can think of doing is just getting a set of 275/40/20" ATR's.... but i'm not sure they will be any good off road?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

May be away with work, but up for a day trip if home.
Will confirm later next week.
Well it looks good with work in that they have given me a day release :) for the weekend.
Can only make it for Saturday with the family though, as Sunday has the wifes new VW being delivered.

Singh,
do you have a route plan, track we are taking available? I like to plot on google maps and then put into my GPS, stops getting lost or needing to send out directions easier.

Hi Singh,
All sorted, I can make the weekend 20/21

singh
thanks for the heads up. love too but can't make it. :(

#11 ·
sorry to hear that Scenic, Matthew. Would have been great to catchup. Perhaps the next one.
Markus, Gary
Good to know that you can make it, now we have 7 Touaregs & counting!
Bob, lets turn tentative to yes.

#14 ·
Hi Singh,
As for Scenic and Matthew - we won't be able to make this one... Q is in Brisbane with me at the moment, toiling in the Clem Jones Tunnel....

ASC - current VW brochure quotes 255/60/17 as a standard size, a little either side of this, Pirelli ATR of 235/65/17 has a diameter of 737 so should suit you well enough...

cheers,
..Neil

Sorry to hear that Neil! all the best with the tunnelling & catch you on the next one.

As far as this track & tyres are concerned AT's will be good to have, although last week I didnt have time to switch to my offroad set and used my HT's with pressure down to 25psi. The Touareg can handle the various sections inc the rocky terrain which requires low range quite well but you have to be careful so sharp rocks dont do the damage, esp to sidewalls.
This track is dry weather only and the area has clay so if its raining we will not be completing the entire section & will bypass the steep ascents/descents to prevent any damage to the vehicles or the track.
Nonetheless it should be a great day out!

Singh, when will we be meeting, I mean you said breakfast, do you want to set a time, I think it is about 3 hours to the caves from Wollongong.

#18 ·
Bails, I reckon around 9ish in the morning at JC. But happy to make it 10, depends on how everyone feels and where they are coming from.
It would be good for everyone to reach the end by 5-6pm at Wombeyan. Will you be staying the night?

#19 ·
Yes I would be keen to camp Saturaday Night. Nine start heh ? Might need to book a night at Lillyenfields ?

#20 ·
I'm up for camping or renting a cabin at Wombeyan as well. I'll find out whats on offer for us that weekend.
To meet up on Saturday I plan to leave sydney around 6:30am

#22 ·
Let's hope the rain stops. Camping will be not fun in the rain, won't be able to start a fire ? 6.30 Start sounds about the time for a 9.30 at the caves. Simon is up for a trip so this might be his first drive of the Treg on the road, he should have his L's by the 21st.

Singh please excuse my ignorance "have asked VW to join us for this gtg"

gtg

Hi Bhannaford,
Guys from VW Australia head office in Sydney have supported & participated in most of our gtg's around Sydney and even the big one to Lake Eyre.
I'm unsure if they have any representation in your state or whether it can be organised thru a dealership.I'll check with them and let you know.

Maps & Camping

Hello,

does the trail we will drive have an official name under which I might find some maps on the internet or some description? Found some of the names that Singh mentioned, but would be great like last time to have some trail description.

Just sent an enquiry to the camping ground for rates etc.

Cheers
Sascha

If you can get a couple of points you can get a route from Google Earth , this pretty much lets you see where you are going. I load my Garmin Mapsource to Google Earth and this shows the route. In this case I am not exactly sure, I do know we will do about 80 k's off road, but don't hay any waypoints to do a track.

#26 ·
sorry i meant 20/21st.
Hi Sascha, we'll be doing the kowmung river fire trail, morong creek trail & some others. i'll post exact route details soon.
let us know the accommodation details. cheers

G'day
(Thanks for the reminder Singh;) Karen and I just might be starters, but it would be only a day trip for us; we need to be back in town on Sunday 22nd. Is the meeting point Caves House for coffee at 9.30am?
Regards
Kevin

#29 ·
G'day Kevin, good to know that you & Karen will be able to come out for the day atleast.....will also give Bails an opportunity to drool over the R50 before he acquires one.
We'll be meeting on Saturday(20th of Feb) at 9:30am at the Caves. You can choose to stay and return on 21st(Sunday) or you can finish & turn off towards Sydney like some others have to once we reach the wombeyan caves road.
