RNS850 is referring to the stereo/NAV unit mounted in the glove box. Have you noticed the drop down unit in there?
Map/NAV updates for the unit in North America are already outdated by 5 years or so with no official updates mentioned of being released. Most likely due to the Treg no longer being sold here.

 

@varocketry -- What is reported by the [SETUP] > System > Version information screen ?

The RNS-850 is a variant of the MMI3G infotainment system made by Harman-Becker for VAG between 2008 and 2018 or so.
As for nav database updates, the last NAR VW update was V12 (2020), but user Lysy has adapted the most recent Audi navdb updates for use on VW RNS-850 systems. We expect one last NAR update from Harman-Becker for these systems; European users have had it for a year or so already. --g

Updates are done in-car using a FAT32 SD card. Download the linked RAR file and extract directly to a blank FAT32 SD card. The update SD can be in either SD slot (I run updates in slot 2 so I can record screenshot PNGs to the SD in slot 1). --g

 

I downloaded and tried, deleted. Redownloaded and tried again.
I'll try another rar tool.

okay, i now have a MACOS formatted FAT32 1Gb SD Card that I'm extracting the ZIP file to.

 

Transfer is complete to the SD Card.

@DrGER you stated Earlier that "The update SD can be in either SD slot " but you use #2.

So I need to find the location of these SD Slots and insert the SD.
Is it correct that I then go to the Engineering or other screen to find the update option.

So weird that the SSP you read on the system didn't show where the slots were to be found.

 

@varocketry -- The main unit is mounted in the glovebox. If you're not using slot 1 for anything, you can run your updates with the SD card in slot SD 1. --g

 

Thanks very much. I’m trying it today.
I reformatted two SD cards on my Win10 machine and redownloaded the unzipped file. I notice the MacOS FAT format read as FAT16 encoding on the Win10 machine. Never know if that actually makes a difference.

 

That’s clever . There’s a disguised compartment at top of the glove box with a bright yellow tab next to it. Tab has two musical notes embossed on it. So I tried pulling that and the control panel hinged down. Clever.

I came back inside to reread the key sequence needed to take screenshots for @Lysy and @DrGER.

I've decided to capture the list of screenshots requested by @DrGER last Fall to have those for him and to document my system.


PS. My SD Card in slot 2 with 0711 update is 8Gb. (Can I assume this is large enough for the firmware update? )

Success. Moving the three files up one level on the SD Card worked.
It's updating now.

 

Yay you.... 3 hours and you'll know.... hopefully you put a charger onto it.

 

Scratch that.... you're only doing the firmware not the whole nav database.... I gotta stop drinking on my lunch break.

Do I press on the Cancel Documentation button at the bottom?

Nothing else seems to be responsive.

 

I pressed CANCEL DOCUMENTATION and it continued. Rebooted.

SUCCESS. Done.

 

Do you plan on doing the NAV update as well?

 

 

@varocketry -- See, that wasn't too difficult. If you have VCDS or equivalent VAG diagnostic tool, you will find a new DTC/fault code due to the software update at Address 5F. It is harmless (but can be removed with a certain Adaptation procedure). --g
