I've had my T-Reg since Memorial Day '04, its a late VIN series (74,5XX) and I've driven it 1,027 miles with no problems. Yesterday, the battery died for no known reason. I have a dealer appointment for this Saturday, but here are the facts:

1. I drive daily to work, r/t of 30 miles.
2. I leave the T-Reg in the garage, unlocked at night
3. I've driven almost every day, but was away on business for 6 days
4. After the business trip, I drove to work for 2 days, no problems
5. On the 3rd day after the business trip, dead battery
6. While the battery wouldn't crank the engine, the remote, locks, MFI, auto seat adjustment, etc. all had power and worked fine
7. Jumped the battery and it start perfectly, voltmeter shows 14 v and always has
8. There were a couple of warning lights that came on, but went off after re-starting and driving around the block
9. I had the lights turned off the night before, but didn't turn off the radio when I got home, just turned-off the ignition
10. The courtesy lights turned-off automatically after every use

From searching all the archives here and on VWVortex, I'm hoping I just need a charge or new battery and a code reset. I'll keep you posted on progress, but wanted to let all know that even the latest VINs off the production line have battery problems (or something else thats causing battery problems).

Thanks for the vote of confidence! Since jump-starting, I've driven the T-reg around for a day and a half, with no problems or error codes. I'm taking it in for service tomorrow, and will see if there are any diagnostic trouble codes and have them do a battery check and load test.

Of all the threads I've read on battery problems, the one that seems the most likely was from Krish re not turning the radio off manually before turning off the ignition. While this could indicate that there is a radio/NAV malfunction, if this is all I need to do to keep the battery charged, I'm a happy camper...

If you search the problems / bugs forum you will find a lot of discussion on this problem. I too had my battery die TWICE. After being at the dealer for a week and replacement of a control module (not the solution and not defective) it was found that the battery terminals were not sufficiently tightened when delivered to the port of entry. Have you service department check this FIRST. Ever since the terminals were properly fixed we have had zero problems.

Re Battery Problems

I just came back from a Cross country trip. At the start of my trip I had 7500 miles on the Treg. The last part of my trip I had to jump start the Treg everytime I had to start it.

My Vin # is 31XXX. I have had my navi radio replaced already. I have heard from the dealership that the Navi unit is actually the control BRAIN of the whole vehicle. If this malfunctions, it may not shut down and drain the battery. They cant seem to find the problem. I was hoping that because mine was an earlier model that the later models would not have these problems. I see here since you have a vin # opf 75XXX, that the problem has not resolved.

I was offered a buy back or a replacement. As much as I love the Treg, I may just go for the buy back...reluctantly. I still have time to make my final decision..

Good luck with yours

Ditto on the new T-reg / Dead Battery

New Offroad Grey / Teak / PPS / LockRearDiff / 19" / Feb '04 build date
On the 4th day of ownership, awoke to find the T-reg wouldn't start.
Key stuck in ignition, wouldn't come out.
Called Roadside Assistance, who sent a truck that wouldn't fit into my garage to jimp the T-reg, so we jumped it off my '95 M3.
Started to drive it to the dealer when I noticed the High/Low/Diff selector was flashing and there was an idiot light on the MFI.
Called dealer, who said not to drive it, but to call Roadside back and flatbed it in. Roadside showed up again 90 mins later. When I started the T-reg to line it up w/ the flatbed, everything was fine (?!?). Took it to the dealer anyway, ho first said it tested out OK, then decided to keep it overnight, then replaved the battery the next day.
Took a 400+ mi road trip on the weekend - everything A-OK. On road and off, pavement, dirt, rocks, mud - what a great vehicle!
Two days later it dies again ... it's back at the dealer as I write this.

Similar story

Sounds very similar to what happend to my Treg... did you test to see if the moonroof functions? More specifically, does it close?

I had the very same symptoms, including the differential idiot light, except my moonroof would not close. It would open to any position but the close position was "dead." I'm having it towed to the dealer today... will see.

Basically the same thing happened to me except about 2 months of driving my Treg. I got the light on the MFI screen & diff selector was flashing. Took it in & they said it was a "low voltage" indicator. They don't know what caused it. They reset it and sent me on my way. 3 days later it came on again. Unfortunately I was out of town on vacation and couldn't take it in. The next day it was dead. We jumped it and I haven't had the idiot light come on since. I took it to the dealership when I got back this week and they couldn't find any error codes. So I basically I'm stuck with defective truck and won't know when or if it will start. It's pretty scary. I also have a host of other issues but that's the biggest safety issue for me. The service dept. says no one has had this issue so they don't know what the fix is. Yet, I keep reading it over & over on this board

Dead battery

Check for a very quiet fan noise in the center console after shutting everyting off. On hot days, there's a Nav unit fan that provides cooling. One night mine was still running an hour later and the next am the battery was dead. My guess is a sticky thermal switch but it hasn't happened again since.

I'm reading a lot about dead batteries and have noticed that many of the cars with battery problems also have nav. Is anyone without Nav having these problems?

I've had my V8 since April and have just started having battery problems. I do not have NAV. Dealer says it's because I didn't lock my doors. Impossible since I haven't locked the doors in my garage since I got it almost 5 months ago. I'm trying to figure out what to do next.

I just posted this in the "Lazy CD Player" discussion: My CD player doesn't always advance to the next song - the number will change but the song doesn't or it just gets stuck where it is. When I had my dead battery jumped the other day I noticed that a CD was playing. I know I wasn't listening to it when I turned the car off the night before. Maybe the CD player "woke up" during the night (or never really went off) and that's what drained the battery?

I feel like I'm part of a big who-done-it. So many mysteries and so many clues. Unfortunately I'm really not interested in playing this game any more!
