So I just paid 51k less than 5 months ago for my new TDI and I get an email petitioning me for 199.00+tax for a Navigation update! Wow, you would think they would give you at least one update....or something. I dont think Garmins updates are even half that.

Wonder if it is just a vw thing? Is it even worth it at 6 months old?

Navteq (the map producer) gets your name from VW and every 12 months or so begs you to buy a nav update.

Same thing happens if you buy an Infiniti. Navteq will once again beg you to buy an Nav update.

I have heard rumors that if you buy a GM that you get an application for food stamps mailed to you.... (evil grin).

Interesting. Porsche provided me several updates to my nav discs -- at no cost -- for my Cayenne. My V10 nav system is pretty useless, and I'd sure never put any money into upgrading it. I mostly know where I'm going in the first place. :D

Cheers, John

Got it..

I guess you cant blame them for trying to sell something. Probably only something you need to update every three years or so....

I am really impressed with the new Nav system, easy to use and can get as detailed as you want.

We have received 1 free update with our 2007 Escalade. The 2007 Avalanche we just sold did not get the same update!

I wish I could get free nav updates.

So... are you getting nav updates for free??? Must be nice.
Those discs are $130 a pop. NAVTEQ - Maps for your Infinti Navigation System

The older VW dvds cost $200 each. NAVTEQ - Volkswagen - North America Map DVD Version 7B - 2006. I checked the 510 based hd system for the newer Touaregs and it is also priced at $200.

I last got the nav update postcard for the Touareg about 3 weeks apart from the nav update postcard for the G35. Been getting them once a year (when navteq releases updates) ever since I bought the vehicles new.

There is no need to buy an update every year. I just buy one when there have been major road changes in the area(s) that I frequent.

As I keep repeating... get a Garmin for pennies and the unit is in your carry-on when you fly off.

It is sad that the price of a stand alone gps system is nearly always less then the cost of a single update disc. Perhaps if we thought of it as the Privately Funded Navteq Stimulas Program it would be easier to swallow?

You are spoiled in your apparent life where there is little fear of random idiots breaking into the car even if they see an empty navi mount or window suction cups. I know of many people who've had that happen here in Seattle so it's a crappy reality.
Crack heads will do some stupid stuff though, I had an 82 volvo that looked like junk, cause it mostly was, with no stereo, just a slider type push button radio with rotary tuner dial, the OLD type, and the idiots broke a window, tried to steel it but couldn't cause they're bolted in. Wasn't worth $5 if they had gotten it but gave me a broken window for trying.

Population density = bolt down all your toys and leave no sign of them being inside.

Sorry I guess I wasn't clear.

"As I keep repeating...get a Garmin for pennies and the unit AND THE SUCTION CUP is in your carry-on when you fly off". Not to mention that with a bit of luck they might take the crap OEM radio. As to spoiled, yes, folks don't "hang" by 50 below not to mention that with the arsenal of weapons folks carry here on their person (concealed weapons) etc., wouldn't really pay off for a radio or Garmin. They don't call it the Last frontier for nothing. To get a taste, I recommend a great fun little primer to read "Fashion means your fur hat is dead". A taste of life in Alaska
