Is there some annoying drone in the cabin around 2,000-2,800 RPM?
Get one of these high flow all metal cats from
GESI. This will tame some of the drone, will greatly reduce your emissions output and will maintain all the performance of that 3.0TDI (do you have an ECU tune?). If you are doing it yourself then you can weld this stuff in and listen before moving to the next step. Otherwise find a good muffler shop that will let you add each component and listen before trying the next part. Maybe the GESI cat is enough and you don't need to go further (and if you have the resonator and sport mufflers I mention below, those can be returned and money saved!)
But if the drone is still too much, time to look at a resonator...
Plenty of good resonators out there from
Vibrant, Magnaflow,
MBRP,
Borla ,
Summit, etc. This should resolve the drone issue and give you a nicer tone overall (I prefer this route over straight piped for a daily driver). Again you can stop here and listen to the sound to make sure you're satisfied.
If it is still too loud, then I'd look at the sport mufflers from the aforementioned manufacturers. Should get you right in the sweet spot and still maintain performance.
