Hey Guys, like I had said in my other post, I just picked up a 2004 V8 4.2 Touareg, I have been driving it alot these past few days, and looks like I am averaging 16MPG mixed driving, which is what I expected, what do you guys get, and what are some ways I can maximize my mileage? I am going to check the air filter tommrrow, I am familiar with my Grandmothers CLK 500 and it has twin air boxes does the touareg have two air filters also? Thanks Guys, and what setting is best for mileage as far as the suspension setup goes? I have it on comfort! Still learning all of the features, so please bear with me lol! Thanks Guys!

Your V8 does have two filters and good luck trying to improve the mpg much more then what you are currently getting.

Regarding air suspension setting it depends a little on the street conditions. I don't think fuel economy is affected much, though. I usually use "comfort" on bad road and "auto" for every day use. On the highway, I use "sport", since it lowers the car a bit and gives me better handling. It might use a little less gas in this mode as well, but if there is a difference, it is very small...

that sounds pretty good, i am getting about 16l/100km which is around 15mpg mixed city/highway.

i didn't notice any difference when putting the air-suspension in sport mode on the highway as far as fuel consumption is concerned.

Right now I'm averaging 14-15 per tank. Last tank was 14.8, highway indicates anywhere from 15-17 depending on cruising situations. This thing enjoys its drink, and its drink is fuel!

Run it downhill - preferably with a tailwind - and keep unnecessary junk out of the trunk, don't carry lots of passengers, keep it waxed and make sure your tires are properly inflated.

If you do ALL of those, you can expect the mileage you're currently getting to increase by .00125 MPG.

I suspect I'd see mileage increases if I stayed off the interstates and cruised back roads at 55 - 60 mph...but the real fun in a V8 Touareg on the highway is found between 74 and 82 mph. It likes to cruise there around 2900 rpms. Expect 15-16 mpg overall.

To the defence of us lesser V8 drivers, I thought about the holding out thing, until of course some simple mathematics had to be equated, adding my lifestyle to the formula of course, along with the price premium of buying the TDI on asking prices. With the amount of driving that I now do, it will take me aprrox 7.5 years of burning 91 Octane Super Unleaded fuel, to eventiually cancel out the savings that the V10TDI would have provided me.

That is a lot of super unleaded ;)

Of course, not to misinform others, and stray them off, I iterate again, this formula includes the amount of driving that I do, and the asking prices of both the V8 and V10 in our market.

I currently get about 13.5-15.5 mpg with mostly city driving and a little highway thrown in for good measure. I used to get a bit better mileage but this past winter our gas stations switched from a part-time ethanol (up to 10%) mix to full time ethanol mix everywhere. On the other hand if I take a highway cruise and I (ahem) may get a bit judicious with the throttle (including triple digit speeds :-D) I can still expect to see 15-17 mpg for the trip. Not too shabby for a 5500 pound all wheel drive truck (though I still call it a car too). And for those who don't play with their air suspensions, or read the manual, it automatically lowers the car to sport mode and turns on all the regular headlights when you go over 88mph. Happy driving.

steady 50 mph

Im sorry but I there is no way I can drive my v10 at steady 50 mph on the hiway.
I took a trip last weekend , got about 21-22 mpg at 80 mph.
Driving in traffic to & from work it gets 17.5 mpg.
I have a hard staying below 80 mph.:D

that's interesting. I wonder if the one here has something wrong or too much biofuel or filter issues?

I believe him on that high mpg figure. Most vehicles burn significantly less if you keep it at 90km/h and not 1 figure over. Just the way the Physics is. Question is who has the patience to drive so damned slow.

I believe him on that high mpg figure. Most vehicles burn significantly less if you keep it at 90km/h and less. Wind resistance is the dominant factor when traveling faster than those speeds. There are exceptions to the rule, gearing, etc playing a role, but all in all, I can easily see how under optimum conditions, low resistance tires, maximum psi inflation, good quaity fuel, etc, that V10 TDI can reach that. Hell, I see an incredible difference when I cruise control my V8 at 50mph.
Question is who has the patience to drive so damned slow.

It is helpful to either list your vehicle in the post or your signature...

duh, my fault, yes it is. I hardly ever see cars listed there.

Since I bought my 2004 V10 15 months ago.

19,677.8 miles : 944.6 gallons : 20.83 mpg : best - 24.86 MPG : Worst 16.12 MPG.

Interesting, the best was the first tank we burned which included a trip to the summit of Pikes peak. The worst was towing the racecar on an open trailer in the Sacramento Valley into a headwind at about 62 MPH.

16.9 on the V8 using the Tiptronic 100% of the time, but since temps are now nearing -40F that has something to do with it. Don't know about the CFO's V6 must check when she's not looking...
