Lights stay on if Turn Signal is Engaged

I parked the Touareg yesterday and when I got out of it, it was doing the 'ding ding ding' thing to warn me the lights were on. Since the lights were in the auto mode I wasn't sure what was happening - never done this before. So I got out and stood behind the car and the rear lights just stayed on, wouldn't shut off like normal.

After much investigation I discovered the turn signal was engaged b/c I made a quick turn to park. After unengaging the turn signal everything went back to normal.

Is this normal? Seems pretty odd to me.

It's a European thing. Because the streets over there can be so narrow, people can click their turn signal when the vehicle is off and it will light up the front parking lights and rear tail light on that side.

It's designed to give other drivers a visual cue of the edge of the vehicle.

I've used it a couple of times in Santa Fe and Taos on some of the narrow streets there when parked.

It is not an option for European drivers, it is a must. the laws spell out that parking vehicles have to be clearly marked during night hours.

Thanks for the input, thats good to know, even though I can't imagine ever using that functionality.

So any other great feats of engineering I should know about, if you put on the brights and move the side mirror at the same time the car hovers or turns into a boat.

Most newer owners are also surprised when they discover the right side view mirror dips in reverse and that the center armrest scoots forward...
The mirror thing is ok but I do not use that option at all. Only real need I have found for the sliding armrest is to fill out deposit slips or sign checks while in the drive through at the bank. Beyond that it stays back all the time.

I park on small narrow streets which are dark all the time. But I am always to afriad to use this feature. How long can it work without running the battery out? Will it turn off if the battery gets to low, lets say I was planning on coming back to the car in an hour but I actually stayed away from the car for 6 hours?

Not exactly sure what the Touarg’s battery capacity is but let’s say it’s 88Ah, meaning you can draw 88Amps for 1 hour or 44 for 2 or 22 for 4 and so on.

The rear parking light uses a 5W bulb, I think the front one also is 5W.

So they will use 10W in total which will draw 0.83 Amps @ 12V.

With an 88Ah battery, you could run them for about 105 hours. Sure other stuff uses up battery power, too, but even if you leave them on for 10 hours straight, it should not be a problem (on a fully charged and healthy battery)
