I own a 2004 Touareg V6 that I bought used. I always assumed the upholstery was leather, How do I know for sure?

If it has perforated holes in it then it is the plastic material. There were two types of leather for that year, cricket and napa. Cricket has a textured surface while Napa is really smooth and soft.

I think it was available 04-06...I love my nappa leather!

Nappa leather

I believe that nappa was always part of an option package ie. #3 or premium plus.
I don't think it was ever a stand alone option and it was probably always part of the V10 package.
I'm sure others will jump in with corrections and completions, I've only been an owner 10 days but I've shopped alot of Touaregs over the last 3 years.

Was not a V10 specific thing. I have seen V8's with it as well, but I have not run into any V6's with it though.

I have those plastic seat coverings in my 2010. I like how easy it is to clean up. The carpets are good too.
I had leather before I know what I am missing.

I'll snap a pic of mine later and post. its a smooth finish and doesn't have the texture of the cricket leather. Its also an ALL leather interior, ie: the seatbacks, headrests, door panels are all leather vs. being vynil in the cricket version.

Damn nickm you're making this even more painful that I don't have this! I've wanted to switch up the interior since the day I took delivery (can't put a finger on why) and I always wanted the W12/R50 interior because of the napa, now I come to find they had it in NA and then dropped it right before my year! WTF lmao... So anyone know who makes the treg seats or supplies the leather "skins"??

I'm curious, I should have the nappa, but I am now wondering. I have all options checked other than keyless entry, so I would think I do, but Nappa in my Audi reeked like leather ALL the time, with that wonderful scent, not sure if the truck does... Pic's of both please!

I just checked my window sticker, and it says "Krystal Grey Leather" and "Smooth leather seating surfaces" in my options list. Never specifies Nappa nor Cricket. Now I'm annoyed.

The two differences are extremely obvious. If you can see and feel the leather texture, you have cricket. If smooth, it is Nappa. One can also stick their hand in that storage pocket on the front seat back facing the rear seats. If it is Nappa, you will feel the actual hide itself on the inside. If Cricket, it will feel the same as on the surface.

Order guide and pricing for the 2006 Touareg says V8 package #3, option code P83, adds 4-Corner air suspension, Rear differential lock, Nappa leather trim, Myrtle or Vavona wood.

I have package #4, which includes #3 :D and adds 4-Zone Climatronic Air Conditioning, TPMS and Winter Package.

Not true, base models are vinyl, cricket leather (which is the leather you get from 06-10 and was the standard leather in 04-05) has leather seating surfaces only-meaning the inserts where your bum and back touch are leather but the sides/back of seat/headrest/arm rest are all vinyl. Nappa leather is where all parts of the seats, armrests, headrest and console are covered in leather.

Well I agree to disagree, the Touareg we have is Leather...

what ''type of Leather'' is in Question.
The OP ask if it was Leather or synthetic ''how can you tell''
Theres napa leather and theres cricket leather (both quialty leather) & of course faux leather (fake)...

However, the cricket vs napa leathers napa is little smoother and softer leather thats the only difference...I have cricket leather on our Touareg and its on everything the Seats /back seats door sides the headrest/armrest even in the dash & center console steering wheel is leather..but its just cricket leather I'm sure... its not synthetic or vinyl.

another good way to tell is the smell of good leather never goes away.

Nope. :-lll

If you have cricket leather, as NickM pointed out to you, only the surfaces that make contact to you, basically the inserts are the actual "cricket leather." If you feel very carefully with your fingers on the side of the seats, you will see that the leatherette(faux leather) is actually slightly softer and more compliant than the actual leather on the seating surfaces.
An other demonstration of fake leather(leatherette) or real leather, whether it be cricket or Nappa is to stick your hand in the rear pocket of the front seat backs. What do you feel in there? If you feel something like suede in there, than you have a FULL leather interior meaning Nappa. If you don't feel the suede rougher texture inside those pockets, then you have Cricket, which means a partially covered leather cockpit.

Both Cricket and Nappa are real leather, but it is just with the cricket leather, not 100% of the surfaces are covered with it! All the above applies to ALL VW models with cricket leather.

Your steering wheel and shift knob are real leather BTW, regardless of Cricket or Nappa.

You may very well have leather. The pleather in Tregs has perforated holes in it that the leather does not. At least the pleather I have seen does.

So in summary, just so that the OP don't get too mixed
up, there were three different interiors.

Nappa Leather Interior: 100% of ALL applicable surfaces covered, including seat backs, door cards and main door handle.

Cricket Leather Interior: Only the seating surfaces of the front and rear seats are leather covered. Steering wheel and knob are also leather. Door cards, main door handle and seat backs are leatherette.

Leatherette: Everything is leatherette, as Yeti mentioned, little perforated holes on the seating surfaces to allow this synthetic material to breath. No leather anywhere, but it may very well feel like it.

Leatherique.

(I know that's a 1 word answer, but after you use it you'll love it...try it on yours!)
