I have a 2004 manual 2.5 tdi, Just recently when changing gear through 1st and 2nd upto 3rd gear and as I let the power off then re-apply the power I get a brief knock or judder sensation like as if I was going over a joint in a concrete road, this is getting progressively worse. It can be stopped if you really slow down the gear change and do it very gently.

The car now if driven normally judder/slips quite harshly when driving under medium load (in 2nd gear most commonly) the car will repeatedly judder once at regular intervals which seems like a rotational knock. It now feels as though something is slipping or taking up some slack somewhere.

I had originally wondered if it was prop, diff or driveshaft related but the more I read I am wondering if if is the dual mass flywheel slipping?

Another issue I have had on 4 or 5 occasions that I didn't originally think was related is when starting the touareg, the starter would kick in for about a second which wasn't long enough to fire the engine then would disengage but the starter would still spin until I turned the key off, it would repeat this 4 or 5 times before it would start, on one occasion it started when I rolled the car back a little.

Perhaps this could have been the start of a flywheel issue??

Has anyone else had any similar issues?

Thank you for reading ......

In my experience (not with the touareg) dual mass flywheel gives another sing, it knocks while in neutral after pressing the clutch. The slip you're talking about, is it a wheel slip?? If so, than check stepper motor.

Also, there is an UK touareg site, with many R5 owners. mytreg.com .

I have no experence with dual mass flywheels but i would bet my money that is your issue after reading reports from others with issues with the flywheel and i believe that the R5 had a bit of an issue with theirs.
I am sure there is a company in the UK that rebuilds the flywheels, a phone call to them would probably answer all your questions. I think they also convert from dual mass to normal style flywheel.
