One question...has anyone ever taken apart their headlight and painted the inside housings black/ smoke? I was wondering if anyone has attempted this mod, since its very popular on the golf and jetta platforms....

Wouldn't this give you less light? Doesn't sound like those doing it are playing with a full deck.
Nope...it does not cause less light out put. most cars now days have projectors so it doesn't cause any issues. People have done this for years with no lighting problems, plus companies like Hella and Inpro make colored/ smoked Headlights for many different applications, like the smoked ones on 20AE GTI, Audi S4's, W8 passats...well you get the idea!

So I guess when you say the inside of the housing, you don't mean the clear lense cover portion? This is what I thought you meant. No doubt anything you put on the clear lense cover will reduce the light output, even if it is a clear plastic.

PS: I googled the mod and saw these pics:

I don't think anyone has done this with the Touareg headlights. And with the cost of the xenon headlights, it isn't something I am going to try.

Just don't do this as it has to be the most ugly thing I've ever seen.

oh...yeah I would NEVER paint the lens itself. :evil_laugh: as for the Xenons, it really no differnent than painting a halogen light (except that they are expensive to replace) and guys with them have painted them all the time. you just need to heat them to soften the glue holding them together and pull the lens from the housing....mask and paint then reseal them with a silicon gel....I was just wondering if anyone has attempted them yet. with the price of a new headlight bucket cheap on Ebay, I may just have to get one an try it.

darin ... if you do it, take pics. i've often thought it might be an interesting mod for a touraeg. did it back on my black mk4 golf ... and on black cars its cool, but not necessarily sure on my white car. color matched could be very audi tt'ish tho. good luck if ya tackle this job!

More references for those who care .. this is a few cars ago my 02 VW TDI Golf ... man I miss that car, 40-45mpg and over 240 lb-ft torque to the wheels in a 2,900 lb car!

Anyhow ... I think that a blacked out (or "joey mod" as its popularly called on vwvortex.com) headlight would work nicely on a darker color Touareg, but question how nice it would look on the lighter colors.

But with the replacement cost of the factory headlights being so expensive on a T-reg I refuse to be the one to find out just how easy it is, etc.... someone else can :chainsaw:

I'm think I'm gonna tackle it and more than likely not spray mine black but maybe reflex silver or maybe a flat dark grey like an Audi S4. I just gonna have to find a set on ebay to practice with...

I used to help guys on the WRX boards do this -it was called the "Koji Mod" there.

Pretty easy to do, but the "goo" that's used to seal the lense gets everywhere -be careful when separating the halves. If it gets on the inside of the lens, you'll never get it cleaned out.

I always used the high temp flat black paint that's marketed for brake calipers.
