Quite excited as my 'treg' is finally in the works. Its a '14 with 64k miles, and here is the best part. Its "fix date" is 3 months ago! 8-2-21... How sweet is that? Its a one owner car as well. Needless to say I'm pretty excited.

so anyways Ive got almost 4 years of emissions warranty now, so my biggest fear is covered.

Now I need to cram on stuff I need to learn. Like how often to service, fuel additive or not, where to buy best fuel, etc...

Cant wait to tow the boat up to the lake thats 65 miles away. There is a decent little hill with a lot of turns to climb on the way, so wondering how well she will handle that. Its a 20' Skeeter bass boat that probably 4000 lbs in total with both tanks full. Im hoping the TDI eats the run well. Then most every other day of the week, its a 15-20 minute run to my golf course.

Can't wait!

Congrats!
It is nice that your emission is covered for a while but keep in mind that with 64K on the odometer you'll be almost due for some basic services. Front/rear diff and transfer case fluid swap. Coolant fluid swap. Brake fluid swap. Power steering fluid swap. If the battery hasn't been changed that'll be coming up as they last 7-10 years. You might want to do a transmission service, regardless of VW's "Sealed for life/non-serviceable" B.S., especially if you plan to tow.
It's not to sound like a Debbie Downer on your purchase but it is important to remember that most of these would be necessary on most 4WD vehicles with that mileage if you plan on keeping it for long.

I towed a 20' 4k lb boat for years without issue at any speed or any hill.

ALWAYS run fuel additive - lots of options, i've always run Diesel Kleen and its factory recommended by Cummins
Always fill up at a reputable top tier station - frequent fuel filter changes - ~ yearly call it
Dealer is usually the cheapest for oil changes and definitely the most knowledgeable. Absolutely must run the proper oil
4 wheel tire rotations w/ every oil change

You can still get the emissions fixed you just don’t get any money for it. Sounds like the previous owner missed out on a stack of cash!
Or he traded it in, which the dealership has to fix it before they can sell it.

Not odd at all. Your Touareg was one of these TDI's in the TDI holding grounds.

its only a matter of a few months BUT...the emissions warranty does not start until the 1st retail sale after the fix. From August til the day you take delivery may not matter now, but come Aug 2025 it just might

I am always suspicious of the amount of time they sat is Auburn Hills. I’ve been homing in on “one owner” TDIs on Carfax for that exact reason. Speaking of which, should I spring for my own Carfax report BEFORE I take it to VW for exam, or is it redundant? For some reason I feel like $225 for VW inspection is okay but I’m too cheap to fork over $$ for Carfax reports for other used-car sites.

I completely agree regarding the hesitancy of picking one of the TDI up that has been sitting for years at the parking facility. Lots of bad things can happen due to inactivity. With that said, Volkswagen has to follow very stringent requirements for the vehicles that are sitting there regarding maintenance and usage etc.

Without a doubt I would have Volkswagen do the once over but make sure it's at a dealer that is extremely familiar with not only the TDI but also the Touareg. If you want peace of mind or at least to have a full understanding of the vehicle then definitely do a Carfax also

Ive decided that I’m not willing to take a chance on a Touareg/Cayenne, even though I would really like one, due to the “possible” problems of a 4- year period of inactivity- and the host of other scenarios without a bumper to bumper for at least 3-years…
Now weighing in on either a 2022 Yukon with the new 3.0 duramax, or the BMW X5 45e plug-in Hybrid. The hybrid is especially interesting to me, plus it comes with at least a $7500 tax credit-
The Yukon diesel is also intriguing as the 3.0 straight-6 diesel is like a baby cummins with 470 lbs torque, and 277 Hp- the BMW hybrid has 389 HP and 421 torque- with a 4- year 48k, along with a 3-yr maintenance

Like I said, Volkswagen group has very stringent requirements of their vehicles sitting in the fix hold lot, so chances are you won't have issues. BUT, it is what it is. Sitting that long, you never know
