I am in the process of changing my timing belt because the old belt had one side of it rubbing against the dampener. As I was installing the new rollers and parts I noticed that my old idler roller (on the right - part number 078 109 244H) was different than the new roller (on the left - part number 077 109 244E). I Googled the part number and from what I can determine my old roller is actually for a Passat. I have a 2004 4.2 V8. It appears that the one I have ordered on the left is correct. Can someone please confirm this?

Secondly, look at the washer pictured on top of and between the rollers. This was installed behind the old roller. When I put the new one on with this washer the roller sits out further than the other rollers which would cause the belt to not be lined up properly. Am I correct in assuming that this washer is not supposed to be installed?

I am pretty surprised by this because the timing belt was replaced about 30,000 miles ago by a dealer. You would think if anyone would know which part was correct it would be the mechanics at the dealer.

My understanding is that the suffix letters on a VW part normally denote an update on that part.

Your part would have started life as 078 109 244

The first change in spec/design/supplier would be 078 109 244A and the second 078 109 244B, etc..

So it appears that I have the correct part, but, does anyone know about the washer? The pictures from the parts catalog don't show one but they also don't show one for the tensioning lever and that came with one so am I safe to say since the idler roller didn't come with a washer then I should remove the existing one?

I see you are sorted now. Well done.
