No.
You need VCDS or a good VW independent who will clear it in a couple of minutes.
I have also had mine cleared by a local workshop who used a generic code reader - again they did it faster than I can type this post!
Whilst the airbag light is lit the system may not function fully in a shunt so don't delay getting it sorted.

You can't properly replace a battery without vagcom, so how did you replace the battery?

Yes u can replace battery, but without coding new batttery, it will not charge properly.
That’s why he said “properly”.

Should I just eat the cost and take it to the dealership? Or would a regular OBD2 work? I'd imagine most independent shops won't have the tools to fix it if a OBD2 won't work?
Anyone with VCDS can help you out with both issues. Reach out to your local VW club, I guarantee you at least one person has VCDS.

TDI club has a list of approved gurus that all have vagcom. Check there.

I'm getting an error when I try clicking on the list. Tried on my phone and laptop. Do you know if something like this would work?

If memory serves, coding only applies to post 2010 (7P) models (smart altenator models).
Earlier 7L's do not require or are able to be coded.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Right… and the OP has a 2011…

As there was no qualification, I just wanted to clarify that it was generation dependant, something I believe is not a well known fact as others beside the OP read these posts.....that's all.

It's all good I know what you're saying 🤙🤙

I have a 2012 Touareg TDI and the airbag light came on after I did some battery work (installed a HAM radio). Turned out I'd accidentally disconnected a yellow plug underneath the seat which evidently had something to do with the airbag. Bought this off Amazon:

It cleared the code and has come in handy for many other things. Much less expensive than dealer visit.
