The grill just clips in place.
Use VW tool 3409 or a trim removal tool that is similar and release each of the clips holding it in place.
Good that you don't have a front license plate holder that you have to remove first, makes the job easier.

Thanks... I gave it a try yesterday with no luck. I'll look at it again once it warms up here in a few days.

lots of ways to remove it if you don't care about putting it back in.

I was able to remove it yesterday. Used the tool pictured and my fingers to push from behind.
