How much oil in a 2013 Touareg TDI?

I recently had my oil changed by a dealer. They billed me for 9 quarts and the level isn't even half way between min and max. Is this typical, or did they bill me for 9 and give me less than 9?

They also left the coolant cap off and when I got the low coolant level warning I looked under the hood to find the cap not on the tank. Luckily it was sitting nearby.

They also did not top off my AdBlue, which I've been told they are supposed to do at part of my regular service due to the emissions fiasco.

Am I being too picky, or do I need to go to a different dealer?

They won't fill your AdBlue unless you ask. If you do it while your vehicle is there for your regular service I believe they will charge you.

Per the settlement-
AdBlue® re-fillings will also be offered free of charge between service intervals for:
-10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever occurs first from the vehicle’s original in-service date; OR
-4 years or 48,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date and mileage of the emissions modification

I highlighted the "between" because I believe it is the key word in the agreement.

I recently moved 20 miles out of town, and my last DEF interval was 10,900 miles, previously it was 8,800, 6,400 and 7,900. I wait until I get the AdBlue warning, so far it hasn't run out at the same time as I needed an oil change so it has been free.

As for oil, when I purchased my CPO TDI in 2019 the dealer did everything, but they overfilled the oil. They tried to put 9 quarts in, about 0.9 too much. Used a MityVac ti remove the excess. Since then (different dealer) every time I got an oil change the oil level was right at the max. Except last week, it was down two bars, which from past experience is about 10 ounces. My vehicle seems to burn about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart between services so that may mean my next service I will be quite low but I decided it isn't worth the hassle to ask them to top it off. I can buy Mobil 1 Euro Spec myself and add as required.

You need a new dealer, This one is obviously try to pull a fast one expecting the dumb owner doesn't know anything . I wouldn't trust them with my car. I would confront them with the car manual with you. I wouldn't trust they changed thwe oil filter and obviously filling the ad blue that should always be topped up.

Any luck?

8 quarts with a filter change is typical.

They are supposed to top off Ad Blue if they do the service for free, per the legal action against VW dieselgate. It's in their agreement. Personally it's so easy, and cheap, I do it myself and there's no mess to clean up.

They will also strip your oil drain plug and say it's not their fault and try to get $$$$ for a new one (stories in the forum here).

Can you trust them to use the 507.00 spec full synthetic oil? I don't trust them to do what they are supposed to do. I have had bad experiences with 2 dis-service departments at two different VW dealers. Both the same behavior, charge for work they don't do. deny mistakes when they make them, blame their customer for issues that pop up after a service. Plus worst of all can't diagnose real problems when they are real problems. I am sick of "no problem found". They are the problem.

While at the same time I'm afraid if I use an independent and I need warranty work that they will blame me not using a dealer :|

I believe the spread is 1 liter or 34 ounces. Which means each dash is about 4.25 fluid ounces.

If each dash was 16 ounces that would be a gallon down to minimum. Considering the engine only holds 2 gallons, I don't think 1/2 of the oil gone would be fine...

So the minimum level, on the computer is reading basically shy of 7 quarts at minimum? So a TDI is in immediate danger losing a quart?

I recently changed the engine oil and filter in my 2015 P7 after an 8K caravan trip across Australia. You will require 7.4Lts (with new filter) of 5w-30 Penrite, Castrol Edge fully synthetic or US equivalent brands. If you're handy on the tools changing the engine oil,14mm sump plug crush washer, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, cabin filter, topping up power steering fluid and coolant is a straightforward job. Topping up the AdBlue is not difficult. Suggest purchasing the 3.5Lts AdBlue plunge screw in bottle from local Dealer as this prevents any spills as the fluid will crystalize on top of the tank. Cut the bottom out of the 3.5Lt plunge bottle and use as a funnel for future top ups. You will get a warning light when the tank is low. My experience with local VW/Audi Dealers are very expensive when servicing vehicles, (between $900 - $1200) were in Oz. At 75K I had my local mechanic flush the ATF and full service kit for the transmission, changed the transfer case oil and gear oil for both front and rear diffs.

I believe there are 2 low oil lights on the touareg. One says oil is low, it's safe to keep driving... The other light says to immediately turn off the engine

"Actually" is the beginning of a NPC meme...

So it's your mechanic's opinion that the MIN marking means Empty? Then why is there a hash underneath that?

The difference between the Max and Min lines is one quart (or one liter- some debate on that) but either way it is 4 oz or 4.25 oz per hash mark.

On pages 574/575 of the 2015 Touareg Owners Manual it tells you that if the oil level is at the bottom hash mark you need to add about 1 quart to bring it up to the Max level.

There's no debate or other interpretations.

It's one litre, no debate as this is a European designed/built car. So, with 8 divisions, each mark is 0.125 litre or 4.23 fluid ounces in US customary measure.

It's utter nonsense for anyone to suggest that the "Min" mark means empty - any mechanic or dealer suggesting that needs avoiding like the plague.

Knew you would chime in. The C mark indicates a quart needs to be added, as it says in the manual 2014, page 461. HOWEVER scholars versed in the fine art of the thrown down, the lower line at min, if a quart is added, it will not fill to Max, but will be two hash marks down. The actual measure from min to Max is 48 ounces. I will stick with what three dealership service departments concur with as being accurate.
Again, enjoy.

I'm not sure if I'm involved in whatever you guys are arguing about with regards to graduations and what the invisible measurements are..... I'm simply suggesting looking at the manual and follow it...... add if you're in C, add a max of .5L at a time, check again, add more if not in A.... seems simple... not sure why a Scholar is required for this.

FOLLOW UP: The dealer doesn't care. I charged back $570 of my $1,140 bill and they just accepted it with absolutely no attempt to contact me and correct the situation. I haven't named the dealer yet because I wanted to give them an opportunity to do the right thing, but they simply don't care. My experience was with Auburn VW in Auburn Washington who has always had rock star service and refused to sell cars over MSRP. The new owners are the Bud Clary auto group out of Oregon. They also bought the Jeep dealership in Auburn. Bud Clary has been around forever in Oregon, it seems some of their success is attributed to ripping off their customers one quart at a time :|

I received the "low oil, keep driving warning" that said to add 1 1/4 quarts. This was after 9000 miles from the last oil change.

It was the bottom hash mark and the 1 1/4 quuarts brought it back to the top hashmark.

To me, those hashmarks in total represent 1 1/4 quarts which I found to be strangely reassuring as it was lat on a Sunday in the middle of nowhere.

As an aside, do I care if my dealer used 0-30w oil on the last service?

0w30 is the latest concoction

My 2013 TDI requires 5W-30 full synthetic 507.00 VW spec oil, but is allowed to use the older 504.00 in a pinch if 507.00 is unavailable, or for topping off. I think the difference might be the ash content standards. I am not entirely certain what my dealership(s) used during the first 70,000 miles (8 oil changes including the break in), but I have been doing my own changes since 80,000 using 5W-30 Ravenol USVO Full Synthetic.

Local VW dealer did my oil change last month and they used Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30. Is that the wrong product?

OMG no. That's the new spec oil for the 3.0tdi lol. Ow30
