We are trying to get a handle on how many of these vehicles are having the 5-4 harsh downshifting issue w\ the Aisin 09D Transmission. If you have had it, at what mileage did it begin at? Also, did you experience any other issues with shifting, or just a 5-4 harsh downshift?

Not the 5-4 downshift but I do get a laggy 2 to 3 upshift (the revs flare about 300 rpm between gears) when the trans is cold and have once or twice got a harsh 3 to 2 downshift when hot. I am planning a valve body swap within the next year to hopefully fix the problem. The issue started happening more noticeably around 60,000 miles.

I get the same laggy 2-3 upshift sometimes.....It isn't consistent enough to duplicate for replacement under warranty yet though. Mine has been doing it since I bought it with 48K on it, and I now have 69K. I willa gree it is only when cold though. I get a hard downshift once ina great while, but its very rare yet.

After watching this for 4 years I can tell you the mileage varies between 60 and 120K.

As for how many, quite a few from all round the world have had the problem and asked on here about it.

But there must be thousands who don't use forums and probably think, because VW and many dealers deny the problem exists as in "Oh no sir/madam, we've never seen this before", that their car is unique when it's not.

I know a dealer who does several cars a month.

What's your interest?

I hope you've got HUGE lungs. Otherwise don't hold your breath!!

Not a cat in hell's chance. VW don't give a **** on the new T3's problems [albeit a low number of cars] let alone the old stuff!

Well, the funniest part of the recall on the Beetle's was the fact that they didn't even update the valve bodies that they installed as part of the recall. So those poor saps would be back in the same boat within another 50-60k miles.

We were also trying to see if the same mileages were where the failures began on both the 09G and 09D valve bodies.

I gave a wide range of miles covering most of the posts I can recall, but if asked for one number it would be 80K.

me too, but only when it's cold and when I started very gently with the gas paddle.

Starting to get a harsh 2-3 upshift when cold. Nothing when warm. Probably just a matter of time.

I propose that the OP change the poll to either harsh shift in general insterat of 4-5 downshift or add a 3rd category for assorted weird behavior.

81,000 miles. As a bonus, I still have my original brakes and prop shaft.

'05 V8, rough shifts started at 52,450 miles. Warranty would not replace valve body yet as the shifts aren't rough enough all the time. Had to replace transmission fluid. It's worse now, at 55,500 miles. And I'm getting a thunk somewhere on nearly every shift and an odd 150-200 rpm pulse between 60 and 70 rpm in any gear.

Hard shifts from 4-5 and 5-4. It only happens sometimes and started about 140.000 km. So I need a need a new valve body? Is the worksop able to troubleshoot on this and confirm that the valve body is the problem?

If the shift from 5th to 4th is so hard you think the gearbox may have just dropped out of the car, it's the valve chest. No troubleshooting required.

Im from the UK i had the very same problem hard shift from 6th to 5th felt like my car was in a martini shaker. It started at just over 100,000 miles and i lived with it for 10,000 miles the car mainly ran around town so i was not affected by it and i had pritty much learned to live with it when we went out of town. I rang sevral places to get this problem sorted out i got prices ranging from ÂŁ4000 down to ÂŁ900 i was unsure who to use untill i talked to a friend of mine who told me that most of the garages sent all there valve bodies to the same place in luton. I rang the company and was told they could fix my car for ÂŁ900 and they could do it in 2 hours while i waited. This sounded too good to be true i decided i would organise my self to go up there 4 hour drive. I got there to an industrial estate in luton and a little unit in the middle with three ramps and a tiny car park i was a little nervy but i was here so no choice. Gave the car key over and sat down with a coffee less than 2 hours later my car was reversing out of the garage and driving away. Ten min's later the car was back and my keys were handed back and i had the bill to pay ÂŁ900 the valve body was removed re-built the gearbox had been flushed and put back together with new oil. My car is now spot on drives like new and im getting better MPG out of the car.
