How many members over 160,000 miles? Common maintenance items?

I am just about to turn 168,000 miles on my '04 V8. Admittedly, about 95% of those miles are highway miles. I am looking at a possible front diff coming up. Just curious how the other high-milers have fared with their common maintenance items.
- One new timing belt at about 150,000 miles (it looked fine, by the way) and new serpentine belt with all new rollers and tensioners
- One new water pump at about 150,000 miles
- One new driveshaft (several tries to get it right) at about 150,000 miles
- Two new complete sets of brakes pads and rotors; last set at about 140,000 miles
- Three new sets of tires; last set installed at 160,000 miles
- One new AC blower motor at about 130,000 miles
- New diff and trasaxle fluids at about 155,000 miles
- Cooling system flush with new water pump above
- Five new sets of headlights - I have learned to get the real VW replacements from Geoff and they last much longer than the Asian knock-offs
- One new windsheild and another new one needed
- Eight new ignition coils (covered under recall)
- I have been using Restore or Slick 50 at oil changes beginning at about 125,000 miles
- 20 restored lug nut caps - the double stick tape holding the chrome covers on the plastic caps was losing its stick. I took them all apart, polished up all the chrome, and put new double stick tape on an they are all holding up well.

The black coating on my front driver and passenger window switches, the AC blower motor speed switch, and the right hand side steering wheel buttons and menu wheel is peeling. Don't know if anyone sells replacements for those or how to go about replacing. Otherwise, the interior is holding up very well and looks like it has about half those miles. the paint responds very well to claying, glazing, and waxing and still looks good as do the wheels.

And that's all I can think of right now - more may come to me later.

I think as we roll up the miles, it's a good idea to post the most common maintenance items so other members can better plan for up-keep.

No transmission flush yet - it's a VERY complicated procedure according to my ALLDATAdiy.com file and the dealer. I did both diffs and the transfer case (transaxle).

I should also add:
- one front prop shaft
- I pulled the fuse on the tire pressure warning system - it was driving me insane!!
- the clip and tab on my gas cap broke, but since it holds closed on its own so no problem yet.

Trany flush is not that hard. If you did diffs and trans case yourself you can do the ATF as well. Just follow the excellent write ups here.
The only tricky part is the temp monitoring, but if you have VCDS then it's easy.

So many people say to avoid the '04 like the plague and here you are with an '04 with 160k miles and essentially all you've done is maintenance items. I feel more and more confident about my early year '05 the more I read about it. 82k miles or trouble free driving and counting! :)

About the drive shaft failure, is that a catastrophic failure or can I at least drive the car around for a couple of days until I get parts?

If it is indeed the driveshaft for sure and it is going, you shouldn't drive around with it. This is because typically the failure point is the center bearing which will lose its rubber suspension material, which will allow it to shake violently. This can lead to a number of catastrophic failures that you don't want to risk, including the safety risk of a possible breech of the passenger compartment. Just my $0.02.

PS - the '04 has been "fun." Every first model year has its share of hiccups.

BrShooter: I bought an '06, 6 cylinder used Touareg. Vehicle has been fine, I have 35,000 miles. Yet I'm concerned about all I read about maintenance, especially the timing belt and the 80,000 mile magic number. Have you had any problems with the timing belt, and did you replace at 80,000 miles?

No timing belt, the v6's are chain driven. Now for the good and the bad...The good, the VAG V6 is extremely reliable. With this in mind, most components are literally bullet proof. I have an 05 V6 with 155K miles on it, and similarly, most repairs were of the "usual" wear and tear items. Brakes, tires, serpentine belts, water pump..etc. Nothing out of the ordinary for a high mileage vehicle IMO.

The bad, the timing chain is a replace when fail item. When it goes, it goes. Unusual but it can happen to very high mileage vehicles. The fuel pumps will go sometime in it's life...mine went at 115K...fairly expensive, but again, most of the Touareg parts and service are. Try to find an Indy mechanic or better yet, try to get some extended warranty. The tranny will most probably have valve body issues. The drive shaft center bearing WILL fail. No need to get OEM, there are replacements out there...you can even purchase just the bearing assembly and have a machine shop press them in.

The peeling of control surfaces is like coffee and cream...this is a given when it comes to the 1st and 2nd gen Touaregs.

Enjoy the ride...compared to your truck, mine had the same mileage in it's first year of service. Good luck and have fun!

158000 miles on my '04 V8. Kessy Module, Timing Belt & water pump at 120k, Valve Body at around 110k, AC Fan Motor but that is about it. I bought it new and the only time it stranded me was when the Kessy Module went kaput. i have found a good deal on an 08 V8 that I think I am going to buy. They are offering me $7k for mine but I think I'll keep it for that. Is there any warning to the carrier bearing?

#14 ·
Re the carrier bearing - yes, you might get a bit of a warning if you are lucky.

I didn't - it was bang, thump, bang, thump, immediately and undrivable. I was in my own drive so it was no problem to get it recovered to the dealer.

Get out, get under and have a good look at the shaft.

Any perishing or cracking of the rubber and/or any movement of the shaft, then I'd deal with it ASAP at your own convenience rather than be let down on the side of the road.

No where near the miles of you guys yet, I have an 04 V6 that I bought new. Only problems I have had:

Stepper Motor
Rear Tailgate window switch.
Flex Pipe leak at Cat

That is it, I have 90k now.

I still have the original battery, which surprises even me.

Original HID Xenon bulbs, getting dim now so need to replace.

Plan on replacing the steering wheel switches.

Just traded mine off at 161000 miles.

What went wrong. Visited the dealer frequently when it was under warranty.(early 2004)
Coil packs at 52 k miles. then nothing for some time.

Some flap broke ($ or so1300) waterpump at 70k so i included timing belt etc.
At around 105 k-120k
new xenons from Geoff (lasted 50k)
valve body, prop shaft, battery. Then all was fine for some time again.
Then dash light came on secundary airpump (for emissions quit). Small brake issue with a line that run on the right top part of the engine and the differential lock rear went kaput. Still driveable but expensive to fix.
I needed a timing belt too at this time.
MAx trade in on mine according to kbb was about $9500 in great shape.
Mine needed quite a bit. Got $8300 as a trade and bought the Hummer.
Actual value in my opinion was about $5500 due to the repairs it needed so I think I did pretty decent. It is for sale as is for 10 k now. I do not think they fixed anything.
With these miles a alternator or starter would not be out of the question. How long will the tranny last, so I could have been lucky, fix it and drive it to 200k or get something else, low mileage and after 6 years I ws ready for something new.

Good things: Great seats, comfortable and stayed like new ( I had the nappa leather)
It was fast and did good in towing. Good off the beaten path even though I did not get to do that much. Love the look of the vehicle. prettier than the Cayenne.
Loved the air suspension.. The navigation had some nice off road features but trying to get somewhere sucked, even with updated cd's I will miss it for sure, but I love the hummer too. I get lots of compliments, not so much with the treg.

I am not close to you but hitting 110k right about now. Drive shaft went kaput around 70k. All new ignition coil as per recall. New windshield just installed four new break pads. Still running on original battery, I think it's about time for new one. Beside TMPS everything is running fine. It is 04 V6.
Blower motor is squealing now and the cold air is just coming out from the side vents only.
Still love it hoping to keep it for a long time.

The coils are on recall and are replaced for free.
Except for mine.
I changed out mine way before recall. Of course no receipt 3 years later so they do not pay the money I spent back.
VWofA customer care was pathetic.
They have no clue how to treat customers that are willing to shell out lots of money on a vehicle of their brand. So they lost one. I am back to american. My Dad chose a peugeot in staed of a Tiguan. My youngest brother went to Mercedes and my other brother to BMW. Both were driving VAG products before.VW "saved themselves the $50 or so these had cost me (put them in myself). However they lost thousands of dollars on missed opportunities. Too bad since I loved the treg. However did not want to deal with VW of A and stealerships charging way too much money.
Just about anybody can work on my hummer since it is all GM parts.

Other things I do not understand?
Why no touran people hauler with a diesel?
Why no Amarok?
Why no polo? Ford launched its fiesta and doing great with it
Tiguan Diesel? Hello????

VW of Canada customer service seems to be ok today, and treated me quite well on a rust issue with my Touareg, so I can forgive them... but going back to 2 years ago, they did not resolve my issue with balance shaft fiasco on the 2004-05 Passat TDI's, and my local city dealer was not willing to help, so I elected to sell it, and go American myself. First time I went American since my dads Dodge Dart circa 1975 and then some late 80's. Some will cringe at this, I bought my wife a brand new Chevy Nox a few months ago. The dealer service was superb, after sales service is swell, and on two occasions, they have offered my wife a fully loaded Caddy Escalade as a loaner, whereas my local VW dealer, would offer me some Hertz rent a car. Not to to sound like a twerp, I only moved to the "city" 3 years ago, prior to that, the VW dealership I dealt with in the boonies(sticks), was SUPERB! First name basis, hell they would offer a loaner for an oil change :cool:

I would gladly have bought a new Tiguan TDI that does not exist yet, or hell, even a base model Touareg TDI for my wife, but I always have been a sucker for the red carpet treatment, that I did not receive at that "key moment" in time from VW customer care when it really mattered, therefore it is what it is now.

I now have about 164000km on the Touareg, so far so good. Looks like it will be a keeper for the long haul, so likely I will be on this forum for quite a few more years in the AXQ scheme of things :).

I have 115,000 miles on my 2009. So far have only replaces shock mounts and shocks while I was into it last week. For everyone with high miles are you getting there without the transmission flushes? My dealer is recommending I don't do it as they have seen some issues if it not done at 80k or earlier. I now drive 50-60k per year so miles will stack up quickly.

120,000 Kilometers.

Parts ive replaced so far (in order):

1. Both fuel pumps at 65,000KM (one failed, replaced both for piece of mind)
2. All coil packs and spark plugs at 85,000KM (one coil pack failed, changed everything else for maintenance)
3. 100,000KM: Did my Timing belt service complete with new water pump, all tensioners and accessory belt), Transmission fluid service, changed transfer case and diff oils, and flushed my power steering with new oem fluid. (all preventive maintenance) I also took care of my rear main seal that had been bad since aprox. 80,000KM.
4. 110,000KM changed my upper control arms and lower control arm bushings.(bushings were toast)
5. 115,000KM both motor mounts and trans mount, and drive-shaft support bearing. (had one bad motor mount and the drive-shaft support bearing crapped on me)
6. Im on my third set of tires, installed this last set at 105,000KM.

I dont keep track of the KM's on my brakes, I changed my pads when ever they need replacing (aprox. every 20,000KM) and Ive changed my rotors twice since new.

Im due on replacing my PCV valve which im just waiting for it to come in, I change my oil every 10,000KM... since day one I had used 5w40 Motul synthetic.. at 110,000KM I switched to 15W50 synthetic.. oil consumption dropped considerably, im hoping that with the new pcv it will be back to "normal".

their may be some minor things i may be forgetting but that covers most of it. haha

80% of my driving is in the City, ambient temps are 35 degrees Celsius on avg. (we get in to the 40s alot).

wow, u must drive only high-way, very cautiously and apply the brake pedal like if it were a balloon :???: hahah...

my T-reg EATS brakes, i guess it has all to do with driving style and environment.

If it wasnt for shocks I wouldnt have much repair cost in this Treg. But I had a busted shock mount so figured I would replace shocks too while they were at it. Ended up being right at $2k with parts, alignment, and labor. Not cheap for sure. I plan to follow recommended maint so will not be replacing tranny fliuds etc like many are doing. I know many disagree but plan to see if VW knows what there doing. Lol!
