Given the nature of this site, I was surprised to be unable to find a poll on this perennial problem. In the interest of peace of mind for all drivers of the Touareg, it's time to ask the big question.

Forgive me if I leave off your preferred pronunciation - feel free to reply to this topic and let us know your interpretation (if it doesn't appear) and I'll try to add to the poll. I beg forgiveness from all phoneticists in advance and thanks to Jason Sewell's listing of the alternatives:

Thanks, VWfreak340 ... I'm not sure how to put an umlaut in using this editor - "TĂĽr-reg" - does that look right to you? But how do you pronounce it? I'm never sure what that umlaut means. Anybody got a faux-phonetic representation of what this might be? I think VW just threw that in to confuse all of us non-Germans, like the pronunication guide on their VWoA site: no two are alike!

I think the other official suggestion is like an option already up there.

I heard that the original name of the VW suv wasn't supposed to be 'Touareg' but something else and since the original name has been taken by anothe suv manufacturer, vw changed the name. does anybody know what was the original name ?

How to pronounce Touareg

The right way to pronounce is Too - are - regg, . It is a nomadic tribe in western Sahara desert in Africa. They are proud, tall and slim people with very dark colored skin (Les Hommes Bleu - The Blue People). French is spoken in the area. If anyone has ever visited Morocco, it is a well known word, describing also the pottery and articraft objects they make, which are very attractive, indeed.

I think an early code name was "Colorado". I read on a site somewhere, where someone was sniffing around in the NAV CD's on his computer, and found some embedded text referring to "the VW Colorado SUV".

I think this was the link: http://www.treghacker.com/tiki-index.php?page=NavigationDiscs

There was an article floating around somewhere about how these people went into the African Desert and found a Touareg. They let him drive it. The article was a very good read. I will try to find the link and post it. :joy:

Hope you find the article

I was hoping there would be something like that - car meets inspiration and see what they think of VW's creation. I saw a documentary last year with a journalist crossing the Sahara. He hooked up with some Tuareg people in a salt caravan and went by camel for one leg of the trip. He also took Tuareg guides and drivers when he did a leg in Land Cruisers - their desert driving skills are pretty good, as you'd expect.

dimikon1 - I think your suggestion for pronunciation is close enough to "twah-regg". For the record, I agree with this, as it does seem to be the form most often used when referring to the people.

Which brings to mind... a trivia question. I can think of only ONE other vehicle that's been named after a US state.

First one with the correct answer wins a free trip to see the Opening Ceremonies at the Olympics in Athens.

And if you can come up with a third, you get Paul Hamm's gold medal.

How 'bout the Chrysler New Yorker.

Also could be the Dodge Dakota (doesn't specify which Dakota).

But yes, the original name for the Touareg was the Colorado and they changed it when they found out that Chevy was going to also coming out with a 'Colorado'.

If memory serves me correctly (just as someone else has posted), the original name for the Touareg was in fact the "Colorado." However, they were unable to use it because GM's Chevrolet division had already announced they'd use the name for the next genereation of its S-10 series of pickups. At the time, I guess VW was still in R&D for its first SUV and wasn't prepared to release it.

This actually pre-dated the current front body style of the Passat (introduced in the U.S. in 2002). The early photos of VW's "Colorado" had a front end similar to the Jetta and not the most recent incarnation of the Passat. (see attached photo).

Gladly VW opted for the cleaner lines of the Passat-inspired front end.

Take your pick.

Hmmm dunno which word suits best or is correct term. The 2 VW dealers in West OZ both use different words.

The German VW engineer that was recently over in Perth kept saying:

Twry-eq in a short, fast and hard clipped tone.

But the French guy also from VW used:

Twry-a

The Aussie dealer principal uses:

Tour-egg

Take your pick..... im with the German engineer.

I'd much rather have a car named Touareg than Colorado.
Colorado is just using a name instead of making it up.
Like with the touareg.
Actually, Touareg is not made up. It's the name of a north african tribe of nomads who survive in the Sahara desert with it's limited resources - not a VW dealer or service department in site. ;)

The Pronunciation Dance

I saw it presented as "Tour - Egg", and I thought that was on an official VW site...

Then my dealer said it was pronounced "Twah - Reg"...

There is a discussion early in the film "Hidalgo" where a lady pronounces it "Twah - Reg" when discussing her ability to speak the tribal language...

I continue to say "Tour", although I am trying to switch over to "Twah"...

This could get silly pretty quick couldn't it?

Well, the plot thickens...

I was all set with the Twah-regg version (my dealer, Hidalgo, etc.), when I finally sit down to watch the VW supplied video...

That guy says it like Too - are - regg...

But, if your buddy has been hangin' with the tribe, I think I will just go back to getting used to Twah-regg...

Or, does the fact that VW added an "a" in the middle maybe change the pronunciation away from how the tribe would pronounce?

Well, whatever the hell it is called, mine sure is beautiful...

I realize this is two decades old, but now that VW has announced that they're discontinuing the model, I think we should square away the correct pronunciation for posterity. I understand that VW did name it after the Saharan nomadic Tuareg people (spelled Tuareg in English, but interestingly spelled Touareg in French). If that attribution is correct, then the only correct way to pronounce it is the way the people themselves pronouce it, which seems to be "TWAH-regg" per the vast majority of sources. Honestly, I'd been pronouncing it TWAH-rig since we got ours (and we do use it as a "tow rig" for the race car, etc.), but I'll try to adapt. :)
