Hill holding?

Just wondering if anyone knows whether the hill hold assistance is supposed to be active while the car is in reverse. I've noticed that my car rolls forward on (downward) slopes when in reverse, but does not roll back on (upward) slopes when in a forward gear. This makes it a bit touch and go in tight parking spaces. In low range, this doesn't seem to happen.

Not sure if this is a fault with mine or if the assitant is only for forward gears.

Thanks.

Good point. But it's also really handy when you don't have a handbrake that's of any use. True of rolling forward, too. Not having it in reverse annoys me because I have to back out of my drive every morning and it would be nice not to have to ride the throttle just to keep still.

hill start assist roll back

Yes....

I have experienced this - and on each occasion it took me by surprise because I am use to it working!

I had it checked out by the dealer at 7K service and nothing could be found wrong.

The most memorable occasion was when I U-turned into a downward sloping driveway (in a forward direction), and after changing gear to reverse, the car rolled forward. After braking and starting to back up again, it rolled forward again .

Yet, when I back out each morning i have a skight slope to back up. The hill assist works every time. I have to give the accelerator a bit to move off.

I'm up for my 15K service in 2 weeks so I will have it looked at again. I will get them to take me with them until I pick it - will keep you posted!

hill hold

Oh, so it does work in hi-range? Interesting - I made it work in low. I wonder if there is a slope angle it requires? Weird. What made me think of it was that Toyota Prado ad on the TV, where the Prado demonstrates hill start assist in reverse on a seesaw.

I know the car has hill descent assist which kicks in only in the forward direction and only under 12mph, and only at a downward pitch of more than 20 degrees. But where in the manual does it indicate that there is any rollback or rollforward assist? The http://www.ohiovw.com/files/touaregfiles/ say nothing about a rollback or rollforward control for the car. I've seen this mentioned only as (HCA - Hill Climb Assist) which is designated a "delayed introduction" item on the official VW Touareg site, which contends that it will only work in low range gear mode, and only to prevent rollback when moving forward.

Are you sure that this feature even exists yet in any production cars?

Hill holding

The VW Australia site has some detail on this:

http://www.volkswagen.com.au/personal/touareg/HillStart.asp?model=&Car=touareg

and I can assure you that when I drive up a steep slope in high range and remove my foot from the accelerator, the car will start to roll back and then stop almost immediately. In reverse, this does not seem to happen.

So it does seem to be in my vehicle, anyway.
