We have a 6 month Treg TDI and loved it until today. Its -26C (-15F) and the Treg initially started from the Garage no problems and ran fine for a short run but never up to engine temp. The next start I noticed a funny smell that might have been diesel or antifreeze. I took it home to look for leaks and could not find anything but a definite odor not noticed before. The engine at this point would not start with both the check engine light and the engine preheat lights on. The battery seems to be fine with lots of juice to everything and no warnings that the battery is low. Pushing the ignition button for 10 secs it still will not start. I have no idea what's wrong and am trying to get a tow truck. In my research I am wondering if its the particulate filter plugged and some issue there but really don't know. While I wait for hours for a tow truck I am heating up our attached garage to try another start. Any ideas or experience like this???/

Still waiting for the tow truck and have just tried to restart at -15C . I am now getting the Engine Malfunction Indicator and the Engine pre heating indicator blinking. I have held the start button for at least 10 secs and no go.....

Sorry for your troubles, I assume it's the dealer sending the tow. These vehicles need to be moved with care, the right way. Sounds like either fuel gelling or icing in the intercooler. It's a job for the dealer, since the car is under warranty.

Thanks for the reply

There is a cold snap where I live and the VW Emergency Road Assistance says the best they can do is 17 hours from now. We are also AAA members so have also called them and are getting the same estimate. Its going to be embarrassing to watch our new vehicle get towed away from our neighborhood. I hope its not a sign of more issues to come..... Sorry I am a bit jaded at the moment. Ill try and make sure they know how to tow these.. It figures there is something unique about these vehicles in that sense

Are you able to release the parking brake and put the car into N so they can freewheel it onto the flatbed?

Under no circumstances should it be towed with just a front wheel lift.

I am able to take the auto park brake off I think. That being said I never really understood how it works . When I back out of our garage normally and a slight decline the brake feels like it is on until I step on the gas. Maybe this will be a problem if it cant be rolled out of the garage. Is there any way to reset these warning lights so that you can have a fresh restart to activate them again?

Russian vs Canadian winters

I would have thought we would have had similar winters but of course it would depend where you live. I think the coldest I am personally experienced is about -47C in Northern Alberta, but where I am the temperatures rarely get colder than -30C. I was optimistic that having a diesel was not going to have any issues in the cold with all the new technologies built into the cars. Enjoy you Treg. We love ours and put 20,000kms on in the first 6 months and tow a small trailer with ease.

Actually you'd be better off with a gas engine in colder climates. Diesel tends to gel up in in sub zero temperatures. If you filled up with a non winter diesel your filter is probably clogged with paraffin. Biodiesel is even worse during the winter time. Get yourself some anti-get treatment for winter driving.

BTW: If the check engine is flashing you should not be trying to restart the engine. Let your dealer deal with it.

Thanks for the tip about not trying to start it. We are now just waiting for the tow truck and the dealer was notified its coming. It will be a couple of days before we know whats wrong and hopefully its something clear. I have had problems with other vehicles that take a long time to get correct after a lot of quick fix thoughts and replacement parts to get you going until the next visit. I am optimistic that the Vag Com codes are useful...
