Well the time has come.... I will be replacing the SAT NAV atennat on my 04 Touareg V8, as many before I'm getting the no fix on GPS message and it looks like it's the atenna. Got a quote from the dealer.... $875 I know there has been several members that have upgraded from the Delta unit to the Sat Nav and i've read that you can just purchase a GPS antenna and replace it yourself. any recommendations as far as brands, this may be a newbie question, but are there different connection for the GPS antennas? if so, which one should I be looking for?

Thanks in advance

Please do a DIY when you do this. I need to do this as well.

For sure, I will be more than happy to do a DIY, I will be ordering the antenna and the radio removal tools this week. I will be out of town next week so it might take a couple of weeks. I already looked up antennas and the tools needed on Ebay. The tools go for about 5 bucks and I found a Garmin Antenna for 13 bucks. So it looks for about 20 bucks and about an hour worth of work, it should be done. I will be saving about 855 dollars. Now in my book, you just can't beat that

If you've got a GPS antenna problem then just buy a new $20 one from a VW vendor or off ebay and put the thing under the front speaker grille. It'll work just fine. The OEM sat antenna is under the passenger side front fender...I'd guess that the bulk of that $875 would go towards labor costs of getting to it.

That's interesting, the dealer told me that the antenna was located at the back of the car, and that the main reason that it was so expensive to replace the antenna is because they had to remove all the headliner to be able to pull the old one out and replace it with the one. As you said most of it is labor, they quoted me $165 dollars for a brand new OEM antenna

as always the stealerships are after everyone, I'm just happy that I paid less that $30 for both the antenna and the radio removal tools

Yes, you have to remove half the dashboard and then get into the wing [fender] as well.

GPS/GSM antenna is attached to the right fender. ELSA says explicitly: the first place it can be disconnected is under the dash, and it is labour consuming job to get there (dash removal).

I have recently replaced the washer fluid tank (headlight washers retrofit in progress) and I admit it is probably one of the most inconvenient location for this antenna...

I'm not sure what has changed over the years since the original 'self study' publications were put out, but according to the Touareg overview book, the front fenders + fascia are the only plastic panels:

(Google "VW Self-Study Programme 297" for a copy -- from there you can backtrack for other self-study books, including some that are posted on this forum)

The front fenders are composite, as are the whole front bumper/fascia and the rear bumper. The hood is aluminum. Otherwise everything else is steel.

The front fascia/fenders in composite and the aluminum hood are due to european pedestrian impact regs.

Hi I'm a new member (as of today) - I have a V6 TDI UK model 3.0 litre - I have problems with my Sat Nav - it's not picking up any satellites so half the time it thinks that I'm in the middle of the sea! This GPS puck antenna that was mentioned for the US model - is this available in the UK and would it work?

Hi gaz-george --

Someone on here from the UK can probably say for sure, but I would imagine that for your generation of system, GPS is GPS -- so any generic GPS puck antenna should work. The real question is whether the connector is compatible...

The EU has developed a sister system to the US's GPS, called Galileo, but I don't know if it's in operation yet.
