Hey guys hope this is the right spot to post this. I have a 2004 V8 Touareg. Have any of you had problems programming your garage door opener to the car? I went through the owners manual and spent about 1 hour trying to get it to work with no luck. Any tips?

It's probably failing on the second step, where it reads your current remote. The transceiver is located at the very front of the overhead console, not near the buttons and its receiver has a very short range. If you aren't getting the fast flashing on step 2 then nothing else will work. Try placing your remote at the very front of the console. You should get the fast flashing within 5 seconds of starting the programming. In fact, it should be almost instant. Don't waste your time if it doesn't start to flash within 5 seconds. Start over placing the remote in a different position until it's read by the homelink transceiver.

yeah, keep the remote in the car. LOL

I have been trying to do this with my 06 V6 with same result as yours. never been able to program my Maxima either.
Then it's not the homelink, it's your opener. How old is your opener? They changed the frequency spectrum around 2000 and locked it down in 2005. If your unit still has dip switches and doesn't use rolling code technology it's likely the Homelink cannot communicate with it. If it's more than 10 years old it also is probably not compatible.

what front are you referring to Medic? sorry, but I need a "For Dummies" version here. LOL
Front = the point where the windshield meets the headliner / overhead console OR the furthest forward part of the overhead console.

Garage Door Programming

I had the same problem.

First: Follow instructions to erase all previous programming. Hold buttons 1 and 3 for 20 or so seconds.

Second: Program the Home Link button One holding the hand held unit to the rear of the top console. This should program correctly but not operate the opener.

Third: Once step two is successful, push the Learn button on the opener and press the Home Link button One three times, two seconds per push, one second between pushes.

This worked for me, mine is a 2004 Touareg V8

1. Erase Codes
2. Program with the hand held remote.
3. Program with the Learn button on the rolling code button.

Step two is critical and must be completed correctly before step three.

Send me a message if you have a problem.

Good luck. I am using a 6 year old Overhead Door Phantom Opener.

Programming 2011 Garage Door Opener.

Good advice from others here but found that on 2011 model TDI the receiver seems to be in the VW logo in the front bumper rather than anywhere in overhead console. VW manual is correct although I tried the console first because that is usually the way these things work.

06 v8 and this worked for me! Tried for over an hour couple weeks ago with no luck. But following those instructions and holding remote between windshield and upper console was key.

Worked on old style opener and new "learning" model. Thanks!!

Dumb comment...but maybe it helps...the key has to be "on" or the motor running for the buttons to work on my 'egg. Maybe that's why?
Yes, it has to be on, but not running. The buttons have no power to them when it is off. Key in turn to on, but don't start. Easier if you put the drivers window down so you can then program the button to the opener if by yourself. All you need to do then is reach in and hit the button on the homelink until the opener blinks letting you know it took.
