I found rust on the inside pass rear door (in the upper curve) of my 07 Egg just went to the dealer to have it looked at and he said since it was a used car the first owner (im #2 had it for 3 weeks) should have caught it so 90% it would not be covered now??? Should it matter who found it and when if it still under the warranty?
As far as I know, all VW have a 12-year rust warranty. Was the case with our 2008 Jetta. Definitely the case with our 2007 V10. My mother-in-law just took delivery of a 2013 Jetta hybrid -- the dealer pointed out the rust warranty to her.

Shouldn't matter who finds something wrong with anything covered by a warranty - the manufacturer should put it right.

The second owner is bull... It does not matter. My VW dealer stated that the rust warranty is cover only if the rust is through with a hole. I recall this being a 10 year rust warranty by VW. I suggest asking to speak to a regional VW rep as the original manufacture warranty applies the current owner of the vehicle. I am a second owner and have never had any pushback on warranty coverage.

Just word from Eric W at VW Corp office. They will not honor the warranty because it is now neglect from not getting fixed by the first owner. AKA there is too much to fix so we are saying no. So looks like I am on my own for the repairs, anyone know a good body shop in Denver Co?

12 year/unlimited mileage.

They should really repair it as soon as it is an official bubble. It's always been the case with my experiences here. If you take a sharp object and push with some hand force on bubbling sheet metal, more often than not, it will puncture and you will have a hole. Waiting for the bubble to actually become a hole could take years on its own, all depending...

As long as it's not a bubble caused by stone chips from the outside, the dealer should honour the repair, otherwise, IMHO, it's all false advertising.

Of course, there are the classic cases where a dude buys a used 10 year old Jetta, with 30 bubbles on it, and presents this to the dealer. Make no mistake, in that instance, they will laugh you off the lot.

So I had a rust encounter this weekend. I found out Saturday night one of my license plate lights was out- so yesterday, I un did the light holder and when I went to pull it down, along with it came some silver paint (approximately the sixe of a nickel) and underneath was all rust! These have never been taken down, as the lights are the original ones :( Dealership said to take a photo, and they'll "see what they can do", but they made sure to tell me the warranty covers perforation on body panels..... it's so disheartening, I take very good care of my car, get it detailed every year- and I'm finding rust like this. I'm not sure if I should wait till next week when it's going in to get an inspection, or get some Por15 and try to stop the rust now.

Yeah good luck with it. I went to 2 dealers and worked with 2 regionals, and all said the whole door had to be replaced. But they cannot say how it rusted, so they are denying my claim and it is all on me. An $800+ door plus paint! Cheaper to say no then work with the customers!!

wheel arch rust

The other place to look is on the inside of each of the rear doors.

Look very carefully at the seam on the CURVED part of the door that is by the wheel arch.

What rusts is the part of the door that sits on the rubber seal.
I have rust in this spot, rear passenger side. The rust is not visible when the door is shut, and only very slight orange peel type consistency on the door. No real bubbling yet visible on the door just a rough type orange peel look. However, the rust on the inside of the door is present to the point that the door skin is rusting apart.

So I called VW corporate and they opened a ticket/case number that my local dealer can reference. Took it to the dealer and they shot pictures, sent to corporate, and now I have to meet the VW adjuster at the dealership next week for a final answer. Obviously the door skin is rusting apart where the door sits up over the wheel arch area. Fingers crossed that VW stands by the warranty so I can have it fixed. It will probably cost $500-$1,000 for a body shop to fix the rust and repaint. It will be nice if I can get VW to pay for it!

Fingers crossed for you.

They did not help me at all but I was told you have to replace the whole door, or I would have to on mine. It was $1,600 out of pocket, at this stage I am hoping for someone to hit is so I can have insurance fix it... just BS that VW would not help so they can save money!

rust being fixed by VW

Great news from my local VW dealer. The VW rep that looked at my car earlier this week has approved a trip to the local Body shop that is approved for VW/Audi/Porsche body and paint work. So the body shop will look at the vehicle, let VW know the cost estimates, and then VW will give final approval so the work can be completed.

Two pics of same area, rust is separating the door skin on the inside curved edge of rear door.:-D

Here is how it went down:

First I called VW national and gave them all my info, vin#, explained the rust issue. From what I have seen on the CT forum this is a known problem, and I reminded VW America that it is a known issue for the gen 1 Touareg. They opened a ticket and said take it to your dealer.

Took it to dealer a week later. Dealer looked at it and acknowledged that there is rust after a quick inspection. Pretty obvious it was rust. Said they would follow up with VW national.

About 4 days later local dealer, Harmony Motors Asheville NC, said that a VW claim rep would be in town the next week. I got the impression from the service writer that the VW regional or national rep was coming to my local dealer to look at more than just my vehicle for rust inspection and decision. So I scheduled a time for this "official VW rep" to look at it on the day the dealer said he was coming. I never saw the rep and do not know his or her name. About 30 minutes later, after they took the vehicle back to the shop area, they said I could take my vehicle and they would get back to me the very next day with a decision.

The dealer did not call the next day with an official decision, so I called two days later to follow up. The service writer was a little evasive at first but then said that VW approved a trip to the body shop for a final estimate and then VW would give the final green light for the body shop to repair.

Dropped off the beast at the dealer this morning with a clear understanding from the service writer that the repairs were going to be done, so it is headed to the body shop and I assume there will be no issue with VW giving "final" approval after body shop gives VW the cost estimate to repair.

Should have the vehicle back in 4-6 days and the rust should be fixed. Unless something radically different develops with VW, from everything I have been told to this point, I expect the repair will be completed.

I bet this is a $1,000-$1,500 repair. Not a body expert but when the door skin is rusting apart that is not a $500 buck job.

Hope this timeline and detail is helpful. Frankly I am pretty amazed I got this process to the point I have so far. Generally I am pretty diplomatic in my approach while applying pressure in a positive professional manner.

I will post a final follow up after I get the vehicle next week.

UPDATE:

The dealer called today and said that VW has authorized an entire new door! Apparently the body shop that is VW/Audi/Porsche approved has determined there is no good fix, that the door must be replaced.

So now the body shop will keep the vehicle an extra few days to allow for the part to arrive and to switch out the inner door panel and all the electrics and buttons etc.

Good news!!
