As you can see I don't know the area at all but there's a VW dealer in Anchorage another member used to drive 400 miles to visit (well he had a key of course!).

Would they be a better bet than Seattle?

All modern cars have similar key security by the way. VW is not unique.
No, because it's like a 1,000 drive from here, and it would have to still go on a ferry (that will cost probably about $1000) and then be towed that entire way. I'm certain it would be cheaper to just barge it the entire way. There is a dealership closer in Canada that may be an option, but still same thing applies, although it is much less of a drive. I have been to the dealership in Anchorage to get the TDI fix too and my experience was awful. Like, it would be comical how bad it was if it didn't have to do with my nice, expensive car. I LOVE my car, but I've had the worst experiences with almost every dealership I've had to go to (this isn't my first VW and I've moved around the country a bit). At this point, I'm done. Once I get this key thing figured out, this will be my last VW.

He's come back to say he now thinks the same about the Anchorage dealer as you!

Bummer.
I'm at the very least glad to know it wasn't just me. They treat everyone ****ty apparently! They didn't do any of the smaller items I asked them to do - they didn't even wash my car after I had to pay like $1000 to get my car there (ferry + gas) and take a week off work just to get the fix done... because of their intentional fraud. It's just unreal. I also have to get my catalytic converter replaced, I assume because they ****ed something up in the fix. Luckily that is still under the extended warranty, so I guess I'll just get it all dealt with in one go and be done with it.

Nope. The KeyMe one doesn't actually have a locksmith in the area they said. I think we have a kiosk in the Fred Meyer or something, but that won't work for these purposes. Doaks is the one everyone in town goes to, and he already told me he couldn't help me. I put up flyers all over downtown, and it's First Friday today, which lots of locals go to, so hopefully the pic I included will jog someone's memory.

Yes all of the car companies not just VW have learned that this " you must connect to the mothership" is a lucrative new source of revenue for them and their dealers. Lost keys cost more and second hand replacement electronic modules either cant be programmed or cost a fortune for the dealer to program or the dealers will only program new OEM replacements that they are very willing to sell you at stupid prices

Supposedly done in the name of security but it does not seem to stop cars being stolen and stripped ?? But it certaily drives up post sale maintenance revenue for the companies

BOOM! I can't believe this works. But it does! My Touareg had two fobs - both had lost their connection because the battery had been disconnected for an extended period of time. The alarm was going off as soon as you connected the battery.

Connected the battery...alarm blaring....followed these instructions. First fob re-synched. Used it to deactivate the alarm. Re-synched the second fob as well.

Just as original poster claimed...less than a minute and both were working.

Beautiful!

I was just quoted $360 just for programming.
I recently contacted the nearest VW dealer seeking an additional key. All up cost, including programming was in excess of $2000, plus the cost of having key blade cut and at least 3 weeks wait for arrival.
I'd better conduct a more thorough search for the set of keys that i have misplaced!
