right so I can't find any one but a dealership to do this and with the key I got off ebay they say it is not "compatible" with my model. They were happy to ask for $200 for a new key, $100 for a valet key( which also has the only place to clip onto the fob). Oh and don't forget the $150 for programming it. This is why the world has hackers because it is nuts to pay $150 for ten minutes of work and a file that has payed for itself years ago.

Firstly, if anyone buys a new model with only 1 key you should have pointed out that there should be 2 and made them supply it at purchase time.

As for the cost, I am sure VW have spent a fortune on the latest development of security and kessy and made it better for us and harder for thieves to take our valuable asset. So its understandable. If a Technician has to do all this work to program the key with the mothership and it takes him even half an hour start to finish then that's no more cost than calling out an emergency plumber!

Do they have "plumbers" in the US? Perhaps they're "faucet fixing facilitators"!?

Funnily enough, I was drawn to this thread by the CT newsletter that came to my inbox this morning quoting this article but with the pictures of the new key that clearly can't be programmed, ironic really.

Here's my final(?) take on this issue. Trust me when I say that nobody wanted to find a cheaper alternative than going to the dealer for a second key, than me! But after going through forums, talking to 3 different very qualified locksmiths, and talking with a couple VW dealers, here is the route I took... And as of this morning after sitting in a dealer for 3 hours, I have my second key for my '05 Treg.

-Ordered key/fob from VW dealer; cost $135.20 (msrp - look it up) + tax; they needed my VIN and registration (proof of ownership).
-3 days later the key was in, came in already cut by VW supplier based on VIN #.
-Scheduled a "1 hour" appointment with dealer service dept to program key (with chip ) AND remote (door locks, etc.). They have to program BOTH old and new keys to match. Cost to be $71.25
-The service tech ran into problems when their "new" computer wouldn't recognize my "old" '05 Touareg, so they had to call VW and try several different methods to re-program the whole system. So, after 3 hours in the waiting room and a whole lot of apologies from the service manager, they finally got the process completed... BOTH keys operational in starting the vehicle and locking/unlocking all doors. (who says Touaregs aren't finicky?!?).

So, sitting at home now with TWO working keys at a total cost of about $220, but very happy to have 2 keys, piece of mind, and a little bit of my sanity left.

My advice to Leroy is listen to noobytoogy and Yenti, find a different dealer, and go the route they suggest. Its gonna cost you about 200+ bucks but it'll get done right and you'll have a genuine WORKING key.

Good luck!

Thanks for the write up and I'm glad you got sorted okay.

I recently read that pre-2007 the new key needed a 4 digit code as part of the process to get it working but that post 2007 VW issues a 6 digit code.

So I am wondering if the three hour wait was due to some incompatibility in that coding message with your older, pre-2007 car.

That is only for the buttons to do their job. You need to have the dealer program it to the cluster so it works with the alarm. No other way to do it with out going there.
How about if you only need to reprogram the lock / unlock buttons ?

I'm guessing that would also be a dealer job, but do they need to have the car at the dealer as well ?

My existing (and only) key won't unlock and doesn't work in the key barrel in the door either

I've called the local dealer who said they also need the car there as well (which is stuck in a second level car park so can't get towed out) as the key ~ is this true ??

Lock/unlock you can do yourself, but you need two functioning FOBS in order to do it. One goes in the ignition and the other in the lock on the outside of the door. Sounds like you can't get in yours at all which is a whole other problem. If you have a good FOB to get into the car then do a search for programing the buttons on the FOB then follow the directions.

Almost true !

I've personally found you only need one remote to programme the key's remote lock / unlock function

1) use manual method to unlock the car
2) put key in ignition ~ start the car
3) press and hold the unlock button on the remote (light on the remote will then flash 3 times in quick succession)
4) turn off car, remove key then test remote will lock / unlock the Treg
5) Use the $136AU dealer wants to charge to do the same to purchase 3 x cartons of Atomic pale ale :)

Thanks all, I have been having trouble with one remote key not working so read your commets with interest. Synchronising didnt work for me but I stumbled on a web site VW remote diagnosis - Automotive Service Professional and found a soluton. Take out battery from remote, press one key and hold for 5 seconds to de-energise key, replace battery and then synchronise, an it worked. Many thanks to all as you helped solve my problem. Peter

After my FOB Key 'De-Programmed' itself I couldn't open my TREG (with one key)

The dealer told me it would cost $50-60.00 to reprogram OR if that didn't work a new key would be $469.00 + the reprogramming cost!

I found the DIY reprogramming information on the following website;

VW Remote Fob Programming Guide: | autokeysquad.co.uk

VW:
VW Volkswagen Step-by-Step FREE Fob programming guide:
Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)
Procedure:
1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second
key.
3. Using the remote control press the Unlock button once, and the horn
will sound once.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the coding
procedure. The remote control will now be programmed.
NOTE : When performing programming on additional remotes the procedure
is the same, except you press the unlock button 2, 3 or 4 times for the
different remote.
For example : If programming 2 remotes press the unlock button twice with
a 1 second interval between each press, repeat for 3 and 4 remotes.
5. Switch Ignition OFF.
6. Remove key from ignition and check for operation.
7. The coding procedure can be repeated up to 4 times for additional remotes.
8. The ignition must be switched OFF between programming each remote
control.

It took all of forty (40) seconds to program the faulty FOB Key and saved me $$$$$$$

:D :D :D :D
Thanks Roger. Came home and the car key fob would not lock the car, tried the other fob same, does not work. Would be a coincidence if both button batteries were dead. Anyway the green lights on fob were working. Read the Touareg car manual which was as useful as tits on a bull. VW just want you to take the car in to dealer to increase their bottom line. Like this is all anyone needs, another thing that does not work and pay out $$$. After a number of search arguments and trying suggested ways of syncing the fobs I finally found this one that worked.
You cant beat the satisfaction of fixing stuff. Happy camper tonight.

This demonstrates yet again the need for that second key.

If you only have one key and are hacked off over the cost of a new one from your dealer so you haven't bought it, take my advice and get that new second key ordered TODAY!!

For those that are doing the same thing I am, which is searching if you can buy or program keys for the 2nd generation Touareg outside the dealer, not an option from the couple of hours of searching I have done. So hopefully you see this soon and done spend as much time as I have looking for options.

As a reference: New key at dealer $205.
Programming Key: Another $90-$100

So expect to pay $300 for the key and programming. Expensive but better that losing your only key and having to pay for a towing to the dealer + everything else to then find the key a couple days later at a park near your house!! This luckily did not happen to me on my Touareg, but I did loose a key of a previous car and found it a couple days later at the park. Good thing I had a spare to manage in the mean time for that one.

Sound advice.

I never did find the key I lost but, whilst I had only one key, I did have the experience of needing the breakdown guy to get me back into my car on a dark winter's night in pissing rain having managed to lock myself out with the car parked awkwardly in a narrow lane, miles from anywhere, my mobile 'phone on the dashboard, the engine running, lights on, wipers going, and my umbrella/gamp and coat in the boot/trunk . . .

Well I successfully re- programmed the original key plus added 2 new keys on a 06 Touareg. The key in ignition and door lock method does not work with the Kessy system. I had to use Vag-Com and got the login code using the Vag Key login code retrieve unit so no need to go to the dealer. Was $130 on eBay.
So after you retrieved the pin, did you use a VAG Tacho cable to program all keys again?
Trying to get 2nd key sorted out for my new to me 06 Touareg.

Cheers!

We have only one key and would like to purchase a second key. Do we place the new key in the ignition and use the existing key in the door? Do we push the buttons on the new key or the existing key?
Not that simple I'm afraid. Unless you have the program listed above, you need to go to the dealer with both keys to get them to work.
