As far as North America goes, I think the loss of the low range was a small problem. The loss of the air suspension was what killed us. The steel suspension was nice, but you can just do so much more off road activities with the air shocks.

But the OP has a later Touareg with air suspension. Now, that vehicle is off road capable.

Is that a T3 Treg. Is it a TDI or a gasser?
I also never understood why VW decided to keep adjustable suspension only on vehicles not in the U.S.

We get deep snow and have muddy/dirt/construction sites here in the U.S. also.

 

It‘s a T2 ( 7P ) 3 Liter Diesel engine like 90% here in germany. Petrol engines are very rare here due to high costs ( consumption ) at German Autobahn speed
I get 9L/ 100 km ( 26mpg) has would be almost double.

The answer is obvious. USA is the most litigious country in the World. Perhaps VW fed up with politically ordered court's decisions. Touareg is a complex vehicle. The lesser sophisticated equipment installed the lesser lawsuits filed against manufacturer. Finally, (after Dieselgate, which is merely overt protectionism) no new Touaregs for Yanks. Simple and (IMO) fair.
