Well, a strange turn of events. My 2006 Touareg V8 with just over 241K miles just gave up the ghost. Oddly, it was not an engine or transmission death, but a fire caused by something shorting out in the ac system. AC shut down, a clicking count came briefly from the dash to the left of the steering wheel… shortly thereafter, smoke started coming out of the vents. i pulled over, opened the driver’s side door and flames started from the vent on that side. I was able to put it out using a towel and several bottles of water. No fire in the engine compartment, fortunately. Insurance company totaled the car and is paying us off. Very sad… she was the best car I’ve ever owned. Not sure how I could have avoided that incident… no indication of what was to come.
