Hi all,
Its getting cold up here and I noticed some odd behavior and wondered if anyone has observed the same thing.
It was about 7 F out this morning and I headed off for my long commute to NJ. I have about 20 miles of 55 mph back roads before I hit the highway and can get moving. The 11 TDI didn't want to warm up until I really got cruising on the highway. It would fall short of 180f on the temp gauge even though I was steady state at 55 for quite some time. When I would kick off the cruise and coast the temp would fall back to 140 as quick as I could come to a stop. Once I was on the highway and moving at a brisk pace it came up too 200F as it usually does and I didn't see it fall again. By the the time I got down to the coast it was about 25F.
So I would think it should have warmed up immediately unless a tstat is hung open and allowing some to flow to the radiator. No visible codes.
Anyone see this?. These things need to be warm as was said in the other post to keep everything burned off. Matt

I have not had a TDI Treg, but have owned TDI's before. Nothing I see in your post would strike me as unusual for a TDI. They don't make all the heat a gasoline engine makes. At 7F it does not surprise me that you struggled to get to and could not keep normal operating temp.

Egg,
The only thing that concerns me is just how fast it drops. It falls off the second I hit the brake and will go from 185 to 145 in about three seconds. Makes me think that a tstat may be hung open a bit and allowing flow to the radiator. My guess is if it is bypassing the radiator I should never see such a abrupt drop in temp just from air flowing over the block.
So I will see what the other TDI folks say. I have the 100k full coverage. Just don't want to slug up the particulate filter due too low EGT's.

I would guess that your problemo is the thermostate. I have only had my 2013 TDI for a little over a month ...in temps that are in the mid to high teens and my temp gauge goes up to 200 and stays there.

do the temperature sensor first. If it still does the same then the thermost...... Scrap that. Do BOTH and be done with it!

Haha wish it was that easy. I need to see if the dealer finds a code. Currently drowning in stuff at work. A Cat 3306b that wont make power and a Fairbanks 8 1/8 OP that is gassing the cooling system.
