Hope someone can shed some light before I spend what could be several thousand dollars on an air suspension repair. Had the car in for repair of front left upper control arm which had been rattling for a while whenever going over bumps. That was a $800 repair. Within 2 minutes of pick up from dealer, the warning light with up/down arrows in display appears with "fault running gear workshop" warning. It comes on every time at apx. 2 minutes from starting of movement with vehicle. I noticed the clearance in wheel wells on left side of car was less than right side but air suspension was still working through range. Back at the dealer, aside from the fact they seem genuinely confused, they are telling me the following. There are leaks in a seal at top of both front air suspension units. There is a repair kit for it that costs apx. $160 per unit which involves new/better seals. Then they suggested there may be a larger repair required that involves replacement of all struts at $1600 per corner. The repair they perform depends on whether the extended warranty covers it.

Does any of this make sense?

I'm wondering if they simply didn't break one of the level sensors while working on the control arm.

It is possible that the leaks are there, but if it's both fronts, why is the entire left side of the car sagging, and the nose isn't drooping instead?

I neglected that point. Both fronts are dropping lower than they should with the left side tilt. I suggested that it was a sensor problem based on what I had read in the previous threads here and given that the problem started immediately after they fixed the control arm. It is the suggestion that a strut replacement may be required that concerns me.

A VAG-COM or VAS scan (dealer computer) will give much more usable info as to the actual fault. However, I'm with Matt and would say a damaged sensor based on proximity of error to recent repair.

Or, another thought: Could a careless tech have forgotten to lock the air suspension in jack mode before lifting the Touareg up? I do recall reading on here or VWVortex of a careless tire shop that didn't lock it and blew out at least one of the struts when they raised the Touareg on the lift.

very, very possible you have a leak in one of the air lines to the suspension air bag. most likely the side that was just repaired. bring it back to the dealer and tell them it started right after the repair.
we call you people Mr & Mrs eversince. "eversince you worked on my car."
all kidding aside the sooner you call them the easier it is for them to believe you. and any reputable dealer will stand by a good customer and admit a possible mistake.

Thanks to all for the helpful comments.

Well...the extended warranty group denied the claim because dealer could not duplicate the problem in their presence. However dealer did manage to get authorization for a rear differential lock repair that they never mentioned before. Said it was the cause for one of the warning lights. There was only 1 warning light and it came on within 2 minutes of leaving the dealer after the previous repair. Looks like there is going to be a long road ahead to get this resolved.

Earl - that was an especially helpful comment!

I call BS. Have them show you the codes that they got from the vehicle that points to the read diff problem.
