Exhaust Smell In Cabin

Just bought a 2010 Touareg and love the car! Checked out beautifully at my local VW service department and the mechanic is a Touareg enthusiast with connections with other mechanics here in the NW. However, he could not find the source of the exhaust smell filling the cabin upon cold startup. It is not minor, it is overwhelming. I had him check all exhaust components, the EGR system, the DEF system, the immediate heater, the floorboard, the firewall, and all connections and fittings of the fuel delivery system.
Obviously this is a complex and unusual problem. Has anyone got any suggestions as to where to go from here?
Thanks!

Hi there, what model is your 2010? My V10 had the fuel pump leaking (left side) and cracks in both exhaust manifolds. Smoke from the dripping fuel was getting sucked into the HVAC intake and visibly coming in through the dash vents. It was very bad. I had both fuel and tandem pumps replaced as well as both manifolds welded up (see my other post here), problem disappeared. So, if you have a V10, they are prone to the manifolds cracking around the back side of the individual flanges where they bolt up to cylinder head. You can see the front ones with a torch (flash light), if they're sooty, that's your problem.

Right, it is a 6 cyl. Diesel TDI, yet the effect sounds exactly like the post from Crispy3 with the V10. Could it be the same situation, with a broken exhaust manifold on a diesel? Indeed, the smell (which truly smells like DEF burning) is immediate and it is like the fumes are being forced through the vents As it fills the cabin.

I've been having the same issue with my 2010 TDI. However it doesn't sound/smell as bad as your situation. On immediate cold start (with the heater on/recirculate on auto) I get the exhaust smell into the cabin. As soon as we start moving it dissipates. It doesn't bother me as much as it bothers my wife. You can also get the smell if you stop/park the car and leave it running.

Let me know what you find out!

G'day from Oz,

Had the EXACT problem rectified just yesterday! It was the PCV pipe (a convoluted/ribbed pipe that runs from the back of the PCV to the ventilation - weird but that's what I was told). Turns out it gets brittle and a crack had appeared, which enabled exhaust fumes to enter the cabin through the ventilation filter...check it out.

Cheers

Finally had our cabin exhaust smell diagnosed and repaired on our 2013 Touareg TDI!

Exhaust leak was coming from the 3 bolt flange connecting the catalytic converter to the DPF. Catalytic and front pipe were replaced under the emissions extended warranty. Zero cost to me! :)

Kudos to Arm
Excellent news but you were not the OP. I wonder how they are getting on?

I had the diesel exhaust smell on a cold startup. Finally got around to taking it to the dealership... 3 weeks ago. They still have it.

Details are sketchy right now. They did find the leak right away. They said some sort of seal on the turbo was leaking. Then they said something about the wastegate. Then they said the turbo was leaking oil after they fixed the exhaust leak. They ordered some oil seal. Today I was supposed to get it back but there is another oil leak. They are now ordering an oil return line?

Eventually when I get it back I'll look over the parts they ordered and then post what the leak was and how they fixed it.

At least it is all being fixed by the TDI warranty and they have given me 2 loaner cars. The passat they gave me had the driver side door break. Don't like climbing in from the passenger side. Today they swapped it out with a Golf Alltrack.

Exhaust manifold !.. ?

was known issue with T2's. Mine CASA 2008 MY09 ... awful smell. replace manifold and as an extra precaution the brass ring washers on the injectors.

g even if this is not the prob once you find what it is hang in there. It takes around 12mths plus for the smell to go from HVAC. Just keep using the HVAC to circulate and have windows down..

Then you have the prob of how to clean glass tainted with petroleum residue. I cant offer answers here as my local windscreen replacement dude (Colin's Windscreens in the Shire in Sydney) offered a product to me (he handed me a bottle to fill with his own liquid he obtains from .... god knows where ?? but one tip was to use a cloth very tightly woven like a high class linen sheet ..... similar to hospital sheets to wipe down.

I even used a Wurth product on the cooling coil and pulled out the HVAC fan to clean to assist with the prob.

It takes time to rid the smell from the system once the fix has taken place.

I was truly not a believer until i persisted

Good Luck !

FINALLY got the Touareg back after 4 weeks, 1 day...

For the dealer to fix the exhaust smell in the cabin:

059145736 turbo oil line
059145757 oil tube gasket
035115427 turbo oil line Oring
078145039 exhaust sealing ring
N0138115 oil seal ring (front)
n90894601 lock nut (qty 3)
n91046101 turbo mounting bolt (qty 3)
4D0253115 Gasket pipe converter exhaust to manifold turbo (front)

So it looks like an exhaust gasket failed. And when they tried to fix that it developed an oil leak. When they tried to fix the oil leak it leaked even worse and ordered more parts. So far I can't tell if the exhaust leak is fixed. I smell burning oil from the oil leaks even though they tried to clean up the mess.

Figured I'd post a small and sad update on here. It has now been a full 2 months with the Touareg sitting at the dealer. They still haven't fixed it. Whatever part they need (they are vague about what one time use exhaust tube) they need to install. The part is backordered with no ETA on delivery. When I get time I will get more details on what tube it is and if it can still be driven in the meantime. I really HATE that it is just sitting outside in a not-so-great part of town. Battery probably won't be much good after this either as it is going to be completely dead. Just like when they had it for a month the first time. It was dead. And I'm pretty sure they just jump started it and let it idle all day long. I dropped it off full, got it back with 3/8 tank and they didn't put hardly any miles on it.

As long as the exhaust leak doesn't melt anything, and I turn off the climate control so it doesn't suck in underhood exhaust fumes I don't see any reason not to drive it for now.

Heard back from the dealer. The part they say I need is 059-131-521-F, EGR tube.

Still no ETA on when/if it will ever show up.

What would happen if I get it back and drive it anyway? Yes, exhaust fumes. If I turn off the climate control, or put it into recirc mode, or drive with the sunroof popped then I don't see that being much of an issue. Before it was bad because it was winter and on a cold engine the heater sucked it in. Besides this thing has had a leak since the day VW "fixed" it for emissions. Been a year and a half or so.

Will this affect the turbo's efficiency at all? Loss of boost? Less fuel mileage? I can't tell with some generic diagrams if this tube comes off after the turbo, or does it come off before?

Having it sit abandoned in a not-so-great part of town for 3 months isn't acceptable. The battery I'm sure is completely dead. Hopefully that won't leave me stranded somewhere.

Thoughts?

I've looked- and from sites like FCP euro or ECS tuning they say the part is backordered, no ETA. There are a bunch of Audi/VW dealer websites that just have the part for sale (IE VW of Atlanta). I have called a few and they don't have it either.

I'm still looking, but still haven't found anything. I've actually called in sick to work tonight to dedicate some time to finding this stupid part.

Some extra urgency is here because I need to drive it to Colorado and back towing a small 4'x8' or 5'x8' cargo trailer the first week of June. I have nothing else with a tow hitch.

i’ve got this black crud showing up in the same sort of place. What does this essentially mean? The dealer has never addressed the leaky fuel injector seal issue and i think my issue is the same as what you speak of here in the picture.
