this morning while driving to work i noticed that my egg was sputtering when i would push the gas down aggressively. the car felt like it was jerking a little and then i looked down and my engine light started flashing at me for about 5-10 seconds. after 10 seconds it went away and has not come back, im not sure if that is because i was taking it easy on the car or if it was just some random thing. the engine temp was not at its normal operating temp, so im not sure if that had anything to do with it either, but even when it is running at its normal temp i can still notice a little sputter when i push the gas down aggressively.

anyone have any ideas as to what this could be? i just bought the car last friday. im not sure if the previous owner or the dealership was using 93 oct gas, but since i bought it and have filled up a couple times i have only used 93 Oct.

another question is with the flashing/intermittent engine light coming on, if i take it in to a dealer will that code be saved in the code history so the tech can find out what is causing it?

Engine sputter and engine light flashing usually means something with ignition. V6? V8? Plugs and or coils is usually the problem here. Engine light flashes becuase computer is sensing misfire in one or multiple cylinders. Give us a little more info on the vehicle to get a better idea on what we are dealing with. The same thing happened to me and it was one of my coils. It actually burned up inside the manilfold. Whatever you do don't drive it like that, get it fixed right away. Even though the light stopped flashing, the problem probably still has not gone away.

I'm at the dealer waiting for mine to get looked at now. I will let you the diagnosis. Funny thing on my way to the dealer to have my engine checked out I got a flat tire!! After putting on the spare and driving away I got to the first stop light and noticed that even at idle the engine was sputtering. I did not receive any check engine lights though.

if I were you STG I would take in your treg just to be safe. if you received a check engine light before then it should still be in the computer for them to pinpoint the problem.

What's the typical life span for coils?

I'm a newb to the toaureg still....

I have 47K on my 04 and as far as I know it still has the original coils on it. It also has the original plugs as well. I did not really see why they needed to be changed at 40K when the thing runs just fine. :)

My '04 V6 fried 1 or more coils at about 56000 miles last month. I just changed all 6.
Same thing though, started hesitating under acceleration and the engine light came on. Light on steady is less bad than light flashing, so I understand.

i can say one thing, my mileage has improved. before i took it in yesterday i was only getting about 11-13MPG in the city, and today going to work with the moonroof open i was getting around 17MPG.....this was all city driving mind you with no AC on..
when i drove the car home from the dealership up in Georgia i was only getting about 18MPG at best going about 75MPH the entire time with the cruise control on 95% of the time and the AC running on low set at a temp of 70 degrees. i will have to hop on I95 soon and see what i get now when i go 75MPH.

did you ever find out what the problem was? My Treg did the same thing today and I thought the vehicle was going to shut off on the highway while I was driving 110mph. the engine felt like it was ceasing; cough, cough, stutter skip resume speed. is just how it went. then the engine light came on. 05 Treg v8 sups pkg

i had two bad coils replaced about a month ago. it was running good for a little while but im starting to notice the same problems. sputter, cough, choke then resume. so far no engine light which sucks cause i can't get them to replace anymore until they have some sort of code from the engine light to go off of and write up the work order.....

so im contemplating just leaving it until it does misfire bad enough to log a code in the computer, but knowing my luck it will happen when im by myself in the middle of nowhere so im starting to lean more and more towards spending the money on the parts myself and have a DIY project for a weekend replacing the remaining four coils

yeah same here.. I don't know if the coils are still original but the plugs looked clean when I changed them today.. figured I'd use them on one of the other cars we got around here.. as for the coils..I'm setting beside one right now and they look very good.. under my hood everything seemed nice and clean when I got to tear some of it apart today..but when I get my paycheck I think I'll just order the coils or a few and throw them in the car in case something does happen and I'm in the middle of nowhere.. then just use them when its time to replace them anyways.

Coil pack failures are very common on the Touareg. Replace them all at once yourself. It isn't expensive. Replacing V8 Coil Packs
