We all think it should work as you say, but it does not. Supposedly the 4 zone version of the climate control system allows for that.

 

I concur!!!! but it works for me the same, i usually don't have the two sides different anyways

 

I could be wrong but I also noticed that the driver side also changed the passenger side. BUT if you change the passenger side once you can then change the two sides seperatly. It is also possible that it was because I had a passenger in the seat, because we know the Treg knows if you have a passenger as it de-activates the air bag. Try it.

You can lock the two zones together to the drivers side control by pushing and holding the auto button for 3-5 seconds. This helps you regain control of the other zone when there is no passenger on the right side. I use it all the time!

 

So is there also a procedure to "unlock" the two zones?

I seem to remember ours being able to have separate fan setting when we first bought it ('04 bought used over a year ago), but then it "got locked" accidentally and the two zones have been synced ever since. I started to question if they ever really functioned independently until I found this post.

Yes, just adjust the passenger temperature up or down if they have been synchronised using the AUTO button depressed for 3 seconds method as described above but the fan speed is not independent on each side.

 

Only in 4-zone climate. Went thoroughly this with my V8...thought the same as you, but with 2-zone, fan speed is not independent for each side. Sorry.
