How many miles did your bearing last?

80k miles. Yes, summertime heat... how many others have failed immediately following an unrelated (and equally costly) repair?

#14 ·
82k miles. Summer heat. And not a week after we had to have an A/C line replaced.

Looks like the saga isn't over tho... Our Colorado Driveshaft replacement is out-of-balance. We were advised to give it a few months to "break in" but still rumbly. Have to arrange for a replacement for the replacement soon.

And that A/C line is leaking...

Maybe just moving from leased car to leased car is a good idea after all...

I've done a lot of research on this.

Failure is most common at 60-70,000 miles.

So many are going that VW ought to be ashamed of themselves especially as it's around GBÂŁ1,000 US$ 1,500 to fix at the dealers, but less than half that if you can find a transmission specialist who can fit a new bearing to your prop [UK] or drive [US] shaft!

56K miles. Mine was just replaced under VW Platinum warranty. The pronounced vibrations between 20-25 mi/hr and then again at about 80 mi/hr. The dealer did not even take it for a test drive. They looked at the bearing, saw the failure and had it quickly approved by warranty company. Total bill $1,303 - my cost $100. Gotta love VW warranty :)

Failure at 74K Miles.

 Hours after ordering new tires, I took a ride and got the center console rumble. I felt it at high speeds earlier in the week but figured i was getting new tires anyway. I just ordered my replacement from Indianapolis rack and Axle. I will report on the service and the quality of the replacement when it gets to my local shop.

VW wanted 1100. Option in the UK for just the carrier bearing but my local was unsure of installing it. 175 shipped to US. Indy Rack took my order today and at a price that crushed VW.

I would not dare drive it long in that state just to the shop.

Failed at 74,300 miles

yep, summer heats has come around. Just noticed a couple of weeks ago under heavier than normal acceleration the thumping. So I've got my driveshaft center carrier bearing failing, and yes, i'm 300 miles out of warranty!

Oh well. I opened up a ticket with VW USA to see if they will help out with a warranty claim. Supposed to hear back tomorrow so stay tuned.

If they refuse I'm going to order from colorado drive shaft per the recommendations here on club touareg and swap it out myself. Oh, the journey has just begun, trying to maintain my V10 TDI reg myself

I've got 3 cars, and this one is our "new and reliable one" - the old diesel benz i maintain all myself. The big diesel pick-up i take to a specialist. what to do with the reg??

Failed at 90600 miles

Got to 4 miles from home and after stopping at a stoplight I began to pull away from the light and had a significant shudder and knocking when I hit 30mph. Pulled over to check things out since it was so sudden but nothing obvious. Turned around and took the back roads home. Anything over 20mph even with the car in neutral had a distinct shake and knock under the center armrest.

Coinsidently I was on the way to pick up parts to fix a broken toilet. Of course this is all happening while the other half is out of town and it is Memorial Day weekend.

Thankfully we have another 9000 on the extended warranty so we should be covered on the repair. We'll see what the dealer says on Tuesday.

I'll have to fire up the Pacific Coast and ride to work this next week. I'm hoping for no rain.

Have a great Memorial Day my fellow Americans!

Funny you should mention it - we were on our way up to Arlington National Cemetary this morning - the whole gang in the car, crossed a bridge and bam - there it went ! Just under 60kmi!!

Gotta try to find someone to maybe press in a new bearing or go with colorado driveshaft or indy rack...

Anybody have any luck with the bearings that you can get from England?

Mine lasted 70,000miles (112,000 km). Started making noises while on summer holidays in Dec.

Got a refurbished shaft from a local propshaft manufacturer. Did a service exhange (swapped my old one for a refurbished one). Cost me R1,311 (US$180). They replace the bearing with a unit off a BMW X3. Did the install myself.

VWDude, while doing some research on the prop issue, I noticed that the number originally fitted to my car has been superceded twice, so maybe a new one from the delaer would last longer now. But I wasn't prepared to spend R14k (almost US$2k) to find out. I can fit 10 refurbished shafts for the same price and I'm prety sure I won't be driving my Treg for another 700,000miles.

My guess was correct, it is indeed the hangar bearing that died. Put the car into xtra-level and Dick scooted under to get some pictures and a quick movie.

I thought folks might like to see how this thing looks when it is bad. Notice the slight space at the top of the outermost black rubber disc:

And the movie which explains the LOUD thumping noise. The picture is rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise so top is to the left. The drive shaft is being moved up and down. There should be no movement.

So, it's not actually the bearing, but the rubber bushing that fails.

^^ Wow - that looks much better than mine that I just pulled out ten minutes ago!!! There was no rubber holding the driveshaft at all!!! I could easily lift the driveshaft inside the bearing! I'm trying to find out if Colorado Driveshaft can supply me with a bearing so that I can possibly get it pressed in local - hopefully some connections here can help me out.

BTW - removal wasn't too bad. Follow the instructions on Colorado Driveshaft's website and it should go no problem.

A little help here! I notice a week ago while making a hard right turn from a complete stop I had to get on the gas hard and all of a sudden I hear a banging from the transmission area. It has happened twice since them both times while turning hard right and getting on the gas. Is this also a symptom of the bad drive shaft bearing on a V-10?

That sounds more like a stepper motor than a drive shaft.

Drive shaft or Transfer Case

Well today i was driving on GSP doing 80mph. I just notice that my 04 t-egg just hit 100000 mil. I called my wife and said Yahooo 100000 with no problem at all nice job VW. Then there was a loud banging noise coming from the middle of the car. It sounded like the driveshaft was broken (this happen on my Range Rover) so I pulled over and took a look at the driveshaft, looks fine.. I then pulled on it to see if it moved; nice and tight. So i got back in the t-egg started to drive and when the t-egg hit 25mph that thumping noise came back. So i finally got the t-egg to a repair place the guy look at it and said I have to take it back to the dealer it might be my Transfer Case that's making that noise.kaboom
So i ran home and jump on here to see if anyone have this issues. And it just might be something small love this site:cool::clapclap:

My V-10 started banging near the transmission tunnel a couple of weeks ago. I crawled under it and didn't see anything wrong but I remember reading on here that it is difficult to see the rubber donut coming apart that holds the bearing. I took it to the dealer and there she sits while they repair the drive shaft, center bearing. They called today with bad news, the driveshafts are on backorder. They told me they were going to call some other dealers to see if anyone had them in stock. Luckily they found one and are overnighting it so it can be repaired tomorrow. However, I don't have to pay a cent as she has 45k miles and is still under warranty. I guess I push my right foot down too much and too far or the V-10 torque just tears them up quicker. Likey both!

The part from CO Drivshaft is the best way to go out of warranty ($500 + $100 core charge for the whole works). There is a DIY article in the DIY section of this forum on doing the work yourself. If you have any mechanical ability, you can do the repair yourself in less than 1 hour while laying on the garage floor.

VW is charging folks in the neighborhood of $1300 I think I've heard.

To do my drive shaft came in from Colorado Driveshaf. Took it to the dealer and boy was they mad.. lol I told them how much i paid for the part then they became more mad.lol They tryed to explain to me that with the dealer part i would get a 3 year warranty and i said ya with a 2000 bill up my ass. With a 500 dollar part and a 1 year warranty who need to spend that much money. Good job Colorado Driveshaf you put money back on my table

Went out on Labor Day

I have a 2006 V6. Mine just went out and I'm about to hit 45,000 miles. I just purchased the T-reg about a month ago and I'm the third owner. It looks like the trend of the bearing going out during the summer continues since mine died on Labor Day. Luckily I'm still under VW warranty so the cost is covered but they are telling me 1-2 weeks for the part to come in. Does that sound like the right time frame?

corinne,
Mine went out this summer with 43k miles on her. The dealer called and told me the driveshafts were on backorder. Probably due to everyones going out at the same time. But a couple of hours later the dealer called and told me they searched other dealers and found one. I would suggest you call the dealer and ask if they have followed this path. My only concern now is when she hits 80k miles and she is out of warranty and it goes out again it is coming out of my pocket. I cannot find anywhere the answer to my question, is the new driveshaft a better design than the original one???

In the UK it was fitted next day. In the US there may be bigger distances for the spares to travel to deliver the parts, but 1-2 weeks seems excessive.
