Do you lock your doors at night?

I was wondering if anyone was having problems with their battery discharging. I had to have my Touareg jumped yesterday because of a dead battery (i've only had it for 3 weeks). I then brought it to the dealership to have it checked out. The service guy told me that the reason the battery died is because I don't lock the doors at night??

He said that when the doors are unlocked the car is constantly running system checks which drain the battery and when you lock the doors it puts the car in "sleep mode". I've never heard of this before and I don't see it mentioned anywhere in the manual. This answer just doesn't seem right to me considering I only leave the doors unlocked maybe 10% of the time. I did, however, leave it unlocked for 36 hours before this happened. Has anyone ever heard of this?

It seems to me that it could be possible... the fuel pump charges as soon as the drivers door is opened, I could believe it may be monitoring while unlocked in preparation for vehicle entry. But, if so, it is a poor design.
I am also in the same habit as Mike, of locking all the time, though I don't always lock my home. It's almost like she's chirping goodnight as I walk away!!

I do not lock the doors when the car is in the garage and nothing has happened to me so far. I know the fuel pump starts working when the door is opened. May be I should start locking it everyday in the garage. May be too much of software without configuration control that has slipped to

Have the "T" 4 months, never lock it at night, It sometimes sets unlocked in the garage up to 48 hours. Never had the battery go down.

Did leave driver's door partly open one night ( it shuts hard because it doesn't fit - adjusted too tight, closes hard. VW balances though - passenger door doesn't fit tight enough, has wind noise) and when I discovered door was open in morning, dome lights didn't come on because computer had shut them off. Battery was fine, lights started working after I started the engine.

I think the mechanic's answer was a lousy excuse to put you off and make you go away. It's easier to make you live with it than to find out what is wrong. Persistence is the key in the face of such an attitude, and in fact, locking or not should make no difference overnight or even for several days.

I agree. That can't be the case. I've had mine since June and rarely lock it in the garage... day or night, and have never had that problem. So, if it's not happening to every Touareg, that seems to me to be an unacceptable answer. Also, check the manual. If it doesn't mention this requirement (and I don't remember seeing it or hearing my salesguy upon delivery tell me I had to lock it), then it doesn't seem to me to be the reason for your problem. But then again... what do I know? I am not German.

Thanks for all of you input. This is very puzzling to me considering that the battery has died twice... that I know of. The day that I got the car the sales guy had it running when I got there because he said the battery had died and they just jumped it. But the serive dept. checked it out and it was fine. So the dealership doesn't lock the doors either?? It just makes no sense to me. And as we test drove it, the sunroof wasn't closing but they claimed that it was due to the battery being low. They said that when the battery is low, the car will start shutting things down. The sunroof problem cleared itself up though.

They also told me that when the battery dies you have to take it in so they can reset everything. And what was really strange is after road side assitance jumped it, the car said that I had no gas, which I know I did. On my 30 minute drive to the dealership the fuel reading finally went back to where it should have been. I was scared to drive the car because I didn't know what else was going to happen. The only good thing that came out of this whole mess is that I found out my radio has RDS... but that's another story!

I'm going to call them right now and tell them that I need a better explanation since obviously it's not happening to everyone and they need to fix the problem or show me some documentation.

Thanks for all of you help!

without quesiton in my opinion no car manufacturer would create a product that drains the battery when the car is not locked... That would be just impossible to do...

There have been some problems with the battery connection on the Tregs. There is some info in the threads on this site. Check them out using the search function.

To everyone that owns a touareg. lock your doors. I would hate to lose my baby to some ignorant thief. I would have to track him down and beat him with his own leg!

Treg does turn off some of the not essential equipment (radio, sunroof, etc) when the battery is low... I read it in one of volkswagen´s websites.. when I get the car I´ll search for this in the manual.. also, the V10 has as option the twin battery

What is radio RDS??

I lock my car in the garage nightly. Never had a battery issue and im running XMsatellite and cellphone base unit that never turns off.

I did notice an odd thing, if you turn off your car before the turn signal stops, your exterior lights wont go off. Ive come out in the morning to the garage and my headlights and side mirror lights were still on. Odd yes, but what i think you will all find more interesting is that MY BATTERY WASNT DEAD.

My other T-reg (the sick one) lost power first week, key stuck in ignition, flashing lights, no power the works, had to have it towed to dealership they jumped it and its been fine since then no idea what caused it.

I never lock my treg when it is parked in my garrage at night. I went to europe a couple of moths ago for five weeks and left it unlocked with the key inside and did not drain the battery. IMO I don't think the problem is leaving the vehicle unlocked.

I went away on vacation for 8 days and had my Treg in the garage (doors locked). Came home yesterday and unlocked the Treg to put something in the car - I didn't try to start it - and I did leave it unlocked overnight. Tried to start it today and it wouldn't start and the key is stuck in the ignition. According to VW Roadside Assistance, the key getting stuck in the ignition is a "feature" - I'm not sure why. Anyway, I don't know if the battery died while I was away on vacation or if it died overnight because I left the doors unlocked...? I've had the Treg for 5 weeks, VIN #35xxx... I was hoping I was in the clear from the dead battery problem I've heard so much about, but now I know that I'm not so lucky. But now I'm going to lock my doors every night.

I was at my dealership today... and this talk of making sure you lock your car at night or the battery will die is being called absolute B-S by my TOUAREG Certified Tech.

Someone on Vortex posted a thread that a dealership in Florida has found that a battery cutoff switch used for transporting the TOUAREG across the ocean is where the problem is cropping up. It's been written that when the switch is removed, the connections aren't being tightened properly.

I don't know if this is gospel, but at least the tech who works on my TOAUREG says the lock thing is a bunch of hooey!

This whole locking your doors at night thing is getting out of hand. My husband and I found out that LOCKING your doors causes the battery to drain more! Since they replaced my compass control unit the car is fine and holds a steady voltage. Locking your doors or not doesn't matter in my opinion.

If your battery does die, I wouldn't take it lightly. If the dealership can't figure out what's wrong with it, have them call Aristocrat VW in Sanford, FL. I believe they have the answer.

If you want to test it out yourself, just hook up a multi-meter to the battery terminals and document the voltage every hour or so for half a day. The voltage shouldn't drop below 12.5v. Mine went all the way down to 11.6 in 10 hours. Since getting it fixed, I've left it unlocked and let it sit for 36-48 hrs. and the voltage doesn't drop at all!

From past experience, I would take it in to get it looked at. Don't think locking your doors is going to help. Good luck.

My battery died for the second time a few weeks ago. This time it had only been sitting for 2 days. Service tech discovered that it was a combination of things: (1) When the navigation CD is left in the nav system, it wakes up occasionally to chat with the satellites even when the car is off. Apparently you get avoid this by leaving the nav cd out every night. :confused2: (2) The radio was also waking up occasionally - said it needed to do this in order to retain its memory (stations, etc...). Anyway, he replaced the Radio/Nav system with a newer model that doesn't wake up, the amplifier and the battery. Just got the Treg back after 9 days in the shop. Waiting to see what happens this weekend as it will be sitting for a few days. Not sure if everything the tech said is correct, but if it is... it sure seems like bad design to me.

I've had my Touareg locked for a week, and unlocked for a week. Battery was fine both ways.

I had a "dead battery" problem on my old Kadett/Astra/Le-Mans, and there the problem was that I had not completely closed the rear hatch, leaving the trunk light on to drain the battery overnight.

I know the Touareg is supposed to shut down non-essential equitment on a low battery ... but worth checking the simple stiuff: doors, hatches, items plugged into power outlets, non-OEM phones, etc.

I'm still a Toureg n00b, but based on some posts I've read around on the forums, I'd say it was more likely that your rear window wasn't closed completely and the interior lights never went out.

The first day I had mine, all of the interior lights stayed on unless I shut them off with the overhead console switch. After reading some of the forums, I checked my rear window (no indication it wasn't completely closed), and that was the problem.

FWIW
