I'm new to the forum, however, have been an original owner of a 2013 Touareg TDI. My free maintenance is over so an oil change was due as my vehicle turned 40K miles. I looked for a DIY and did not find any except the extraction method. So here goes.

Open the hood and start by removing the plastic engine cover which is held in place by 4 posts on the engine that slip into receivers on the plastic cover.

You can see the 4 posts if you look closely, located front and back, right and left, on top of the engine. The posts have white grease which helps to locate them.

With the car jacked up and safety jack in place, I removed two splash pans that protect the underside of the engine. These are held in place with Torx T-25 bolts.

I found that the oil drain bolt is very close to the junction of the front and rear splash pans and decided it was easy enough to remove both front and rear pans. The rear pan is also held with the torx bolts.

At the far end of the rear splash pan is a bracket of sorts that holds a tab at the end of the pan. The bracket has two bolts and the receivers for the bolts are retained in a small piece of plastic that sits on top of the bracket.

Here's a picture of the tab at the end of the rear splash pan. It sandwiches between the bracket and the small plastic piece mentioned above.

With the two pans removed, we expose the 6mm allen key oil drain bolt.

I drained the oil which amounted to about 7.5 quarts. While the oil continued to drain I went about replacing the oil filter element and O ring. The filter housing cap can be removed with an 1-1/4 inch socket.

The filter element has a tab that should be placed in the filter housing hole in the bottom. Sorry, I forgot to get pics but it's very evident. After securing the filter housing cap, I went back to the oil draining process. With the oil drained, I replaced the oil drain bolt aluminum washer, and tightened the bolt.

The splash pans were put back in place, and the car safety jack and floor jack removed.

The oil capacity is 8.1 quarts. I added 8 quarts plus a small amount of Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5W-30 motor oil. Finally replaced the oil filler cap, and plastic engine cover. I reset the oil service indicator via the car setup menu. Took the vehicle for a short drive and checked the oil level also via the on-screen menu. Oil was up to the fill line and all is good.

I hope this is helpful. :grin2:

Only 3 omissions:
  • You must use VW 507 oil
  • I always fill and start before putting the belly pans back on. That way you can check the drain plug for leaks.
  • do not overtighten the drain plug!

Otherwise, spot on.

Best to use a VW oil filter too.

You might save a few bucks buying non OEM but one or two have had troubles with non OEM.

I can't recall the OEM maker but no doubt someone will post the name . . .

There are numerous acceptable motor oils for use with the TDI engines. Please see attached Technical Bulletin from Audi.
As long as the brand chosen conforms to VW 507.00 is what I think Scubacruiser was trying to get across.
