I searched around for a DIY, could not find any, either there are none or my search skills are no good......any way here goes

I had the range control warning in the dash display, after using VAG-COM to identify the faulty sensor, I ordered it online, about $130.

I did not disconnect the wiring for the sensor until I had it uninstalled from the vehicle, this was to make sure I did not break any plastic tabs or clips on the plug.

Parts needed;

1. New sensor 7L0 616 213 C Front
SEE CORRECT PICTURE BELOW.

2. 17mm wrench, I used a ratcheting style (made it easier)
3. Prying instrument.

No need to remove the front wheel, just turn all the way to right

Showing locations, front is at the upper rear control arm

This pic shows the upper control arm rear section, You will have to hold the head (not pictured)of the bolt so it does not spin around while you are trying to remove the nut, do not remove the bolt.

the pin in the pic above is plastic don't break it.

This shows how the pin is when separated from the housing, remove it before trying to separate the arm attachment point.
new pin comes attached to the new sensor, just break it off.
It gets installed from bottom towards the top, make sure it is fully seated

The pin ends up where the bubble is pointing to when properly installed

SEQUENCE
1. Get parts.
2. Turn steering wheel all the way to the right.
3. Remove nut and pull mounting metal plate from bolt
4. Remove plastic pin.
5. Pry sensor arm from control arm of vehicle.
6. Disconnect wiring plug.

Re-install, just follow the sequence backwards.
Took me about about 45 minutes, I was being methodical, you might be faster.

GOOD LUCK!

This is great since I've been getting this fault for a while now..

I never realized that this was an actual, mechanical device and that it was in the wheel wells.... I figured it was some small level sensor in the headlight and I would've probably taken it apart trying to find it...

Thanks for this DIY!!!

You should def post it up on the Vortex as well...

Anyone know the part number for the rear left level sensor?

anyone replaced teh rear sensor? any write ups?

I did the rear driver side level sensor today. I didnt even have to take the wheel off! I was able to crawl under and get it installed.

I needed a 10mm socket / wrench, a small 10mm open end wrench, an allen wrench (not sure what size).

Sensor MIL went away as soon as I started her up...no vag even needed. (althought, I will clear the cache anyway)

There are two parts numbers with different pricing? for the same location.
Whats the difference between 7L0-616-571 and 7L0-616-571-C ?
Just like the Front 7L0-616-213-C and no C ??

Thanks

- I had to replace my drivers rear sensor also, Drippps has the procedure right, I am just adding some pics,

- I removed my wheel to allow for better pics, you don't have to.... and use a regular 10mm not a deep socket like I have pictured.

- use open ended wrench to hold the back part where the sensor arm attaches to the control arm, if you don't the 10mm nut will just spin and spin......

- finally,... disconnect the wiring last when removing, and 1st when installing.

I am not sure what's special about the parts for the price difference, I would go with the # on your current part.

Reinstall...? follow sequence backward.:)

What baffles me is VAG-com is showing a fault on both sensors, how can they fail at the same time ? I checked the fuse on the left column, seems to be OK ????
Anyone have any clue ? Thx

I think the last letter on the part number is the version.

This changes, A B C etcetera, as the part gets any upgrades.

2005 V6

I have read elsewhere that my 2005 (not equiped with range control) only has front driver and rear passenger sensors. Is this correct, or do I have 4 that need replacing?

here is the PNs, discount price and where I get them:

7L0-616-213 $74.66 (left front)
7L0-616-214 $74.66 (right front)
7L0-616-571 $74.66ea (rears) these are the same for left and right so you would need qty 2.
