Did I just solve the engine ticking sound?

OK I bought this car used with 32K on the odometer. It’s a 2016 TDI. When I bought it it didn’t have the timing chain noise issue or engine ticking sound at start up. Then around 50K I started noticing both. So this weekend I decided to change the engine oil based on experience I had years ago with a 2000 Ford F-150. Back then I had went from Dino oil to a Mobile One synthetic that totally resolved the ticking sound so I decided to try Mobil again. Last week I change the oil and have since driven about 500 miles with multiple cold starts. Not one time have I heard the ticking noise since I made the change. I just don’t understand how this is possible but I’m happy. You guys have any idea what’s going on? Normally it would tick 6-7 start ups out of 10 and I’ve not had one since the change. I’m using ESP 10/30.

Also, the previous oil was a Eneos 10/30 with VW 507 spec.

The timing chain noise is more like a rattle not a consistent tapping or ticking sound. It also doesn’t last as long as the timing chain noise. Mine does the ticking for about 2-3 minutes normally in the mornings. It’s completely gone now just not sure what could be that much different in the two synthetic oils? Guess it doesn’t matter though as long as it works. So you only have 7k on your TDI?

The thing that really gets me is this is now the second vehicle Mobile 1 has helped. The 2000 F150 I had did the same thing but back then I was using just conventional Motor Craft oil. I switched to Mobile 1 synthetic and it was almost totally gone. On occasion I could barely hear a tapping sound for 1 to 2 seconds vs being loud for 1-2 minutes so made a huge difference. It’s almost like components are still lubricated a lot better after the engine is sitting for a few hours or after several days.

My 2002 Golf has over 200,000 miles and now runs better than when I bought it, thanks to Mobil1.

Being a PD (ATD) engine it should have 506 01 spec oil to protect the cam lobes just like what the V10 tdi calls for. But the previous owner certainly didnt opt for 506 01 and I haven't either. A conservative estimate would be approx 30,000 to 50,000 miles it has run without 506 01.

I didn't mind risking it in the Golf as it was only £400 to buy. Don't think I will use it in the Treg though as I wouldn't sleep at night wondering about potential camshaft failure.

My 100,000 mile service on the Treg is due soon and will be opting for 506 01 oil for a longlife service along with 20% Lucas oil stabilizer, fully synthetic to keep everything coated between starts.

I also used Mobil1 for 20,000 miles in my Bora/Jetta with a 1.9 ALH engine with the same filter. Again, no issues whatsoever for the lifetime of the engine and the oil wasn't thick when I finally drained it.

I bought the Jetta new in 2001 and put at least 40,000 or more hassle free miles on after that oil change. In fact, the drive train was the only thing still working as new when I changed after 11 years of ownership to a B6 Passat wagon.

Mobil1 works miracles.

My Treg (13) has had the same issue as yours it started doing the chain rattle on warm start ups (after sitting for 30 mins or more) at around 65k miles and at 83k miles it has started to do the ticking thing as well for the first few mins.

Will try out M1 ESP this oil change next week, I've previously used valvoline synpower at half the price. Although it sounds more like a tappet/lifter thing, someone said it could be a ****ty exhaust gasket that seals itself once it warms up as well. Either way, no harm in trying I suppose. I could only find M1 ESP 5w-30 down here in Australia though - no 10W - which I imagine makes a big difference with cold start problems... you still get the chain rattle even with 10w though hey? That rattle has been a bigger concern for me.. although it doesn't seem to get worse at all. Pretty sure it's the cam chain tensioner that attracted a lawsuit somewherein the world.

Yeah I still get the chain rattle sometimes but not at every cold start. Ticking sound at startup is totally gone now. Very strange and still don’t understand how changing oil (same viscosity) could effect it but glad it did. My ticking sound started over a year ago now and hasn’t happened since going to the Mobile One ESP. Good luck.

I asked a local VW tech guru about the start-up rattle and brief ticking sound. His answer was that the timing chain tensioner took a couple of seconds to pressure up, causing the rattle. The brief ticking, he said was caused by the DEF injector. According to him, neither sound is a worry. He and his wife both drive T'reg TDI's and he has a stellar reputation. I'm inclined to believe him. He uses Total Quartz Ineo for his oil changes. Rated 504/507.

The only issue with the injector concept is that it only functions during regen so not sure why it would be making a noise when not in use. As for the timing chain I could see that being true.

I'm pretty sure that DEF is injected regularly, not just in the regen cycle. If that was true, then my vehicle must be regening full time when I'm towing. lol I'm happy to be proved wrong, though!

Check out post number 19 and 20 by a bloke called HGR - has some interesting takes and quite the write up on the chain rattle and the DEF regen process in our 3.0 TDI's. He got Porsche Germany to write him a letter about it. Although my cold tick is in rhythm with my RPM, dunno if it was the same for you.

With regards to the chain rattle, Audi put out an official repair article in 2016 for the same TDI 3.0 engine I believe? TPI 2035906/10 . The official cause mentioned in the article is too slow a buildup of oil pressure in the tensioner that then doesn't work as designed. Recommended repair is a software update of the ECU and if that doesn't work, the replacement of the tensioner(which was the solution for a forum member here) All "old" chain tensioners replaced with a new one: 059 109 467 AL. I am unsure if a software update exists for the T-reg that resolves this issue, I doubt it.

I don't know if not replacing the tensioner will lead to any real damage, Was thinking of giving this a try. Startup noise cure? Would an Oil Accumulator work on our tregs for chain oil pressure for startup? 150 installing a chain-prelube beats a 5k+ dissection to get to the cam chain tensioners.
