My opinion, worth what you pay for it... if you trailer, any distance at all in the 100's of miles per trip, TDI. If you just trailer a boat to the local lake, 20 or 30 miles away 2 or 3x a year, and do 12000 miles a year or less, get the gasser. I bought my TDI for the torque, 406 ft lbs of it, and trailering ability.

Let's see if I can clarify.

Gasser is not overpriced. It's actually the lowest asking price for any out there with similar or even higher mileage for used. The TDI being a 2012, one year newer, and NEW, is a killer deal at about $10k below MSRP.

Yes, I want the TDI. The wife is coming around to the idea of it and I'm realizing that financially it might be the right move for us. Financially, the TDI is a stretch, but if we regret it and sell in a year or two, we will likely lose less money selling it since we're getting such a good deal as opposed to if we buy the gasser and regret that in a year or two.

Depends on the minute, but currently leaning toward jumping on the TDI if the deal is as good as it sounds like it might be.

As far as miles driven. I have been driving 25-30k miles/year in my TDI SportWagen, but will be driving very few miles after next week. This purchase will essentially be the wife's but will also take us on trips. Even though we may only drive 10k miles/year, as long as the vehicle is everything we hope and expect it to be, we will likely keep it 10+ years.

Yep, another minute has passed and I'm still leaning TDI.

When I do trailer it'll be around 5k lbs and it'll be 3-6 hours.

If this purchase is essentially going to be the wife's, then I suggest you allow her to test drive both back to back.

You also wrote that you are getting money back through income taxex with the TDI, so even though $10000 difference initially, it is really $5000. If this is the case, and the wife approves the test drive, and given your desire to keep your next purchase for 10 years at least, then go TDI dude.

How much is the 011 VR6 Lux with 27k miles? I remember an 011 exec VR6 with 11k miles for 42g's like 6 months ago in MN there where an additional 3500 cash back under invoice or even less at the time on new. I bought my 012 exec tdi for 45g's with 8500k miles thereafter.

New is new. What to think about? Based on your post's numbers, you can get new TDI paying a difference between new TDI and new gasser or close to this difference. The gasser has 27K miles on its odometer. This amounts to almost 3 years of your driving time - if you drive ~10K per year.
Agree with others: Good to allow your Lady make a final choice - happy Mama makes whole family happy! What color does she likes better (my wife's first question about any new car)?
The disadvantage of the TDI (especially from Lady's perspective) is (often) nasty looking diesel pumps.
You might appreciate more lively gasser turbo performance.

I love my TDI, thus my vote goes to TDI.

P.S. Advices often don't do good to one if they don't play well along with one's heart.

As for the nasty pumps, I carry a half-dozen latex gloves in the door pocket.

If we go TDI there will be a box of frigging gloves in the glove box. Hey they glove box will finally serve its intended purpose!

The more I think about it the more the TDI is the way to go if the deal is as good as it sounds. I'll see what I can find out tomorrow.

Yup! This is my first diesel and only took me one fill up to make that choice.

People definitely look at me funny around here when I walk up to the pump with one on :)

That's because your aren't wearing the pair - one gloved hand is for the nozzle and the other gloved hand keeps the ****ty rubber pipe off your trousers!

Don't you wear the disposable shoe protectors too so the soles of your shoes don't pollute your carpets and mats after standing in the stinky fuel?

You aren't? Good God man, you're only doing half the job!!

Ya know ya start to realize how imperfect of a fuel it is. Poor lubricity now and component problems, the extra mechanicals, gel issues, winterizers which drop efficiency, unstable. It used to be cheap, and cheap to refine how things have changed with all the new refining guidelines but how they used to stink.

They are fun to drive though and i like ours, and truckers benefit the most but will this fuel really ever catch on in the American auto market? Another post or addition I know.

If those people looking funny at you are men in their late 40s or older, then this might be related to unforgettable recollections of their last physical exam. ;)

I've been pumping diesel for two years for my SportWagen and I don't do the glove but I routinely find the paper towels and use them to hold the handle.

Unfortunately, the deal is not as good at we first thought, as I was informed about a $4500 incentive on 2012s that only applies to gassers, the TDI incentive is only $1000. So basically my price gap between the used gasser and the new TDI has increased from $10-11k to $14k. This is a large enough difference to decide whether its worth the extra $3-4k on top of what I was already considering spending extra.

I decided I didn't need Lux, Exec or Nav, I have a Google Map feature on my smart phone, so I went with a TDI Sport model. List was $48,600 MSRP with destination charges... and I paid $42000, before taxes, new, for a 2012 in late August. Bare Sport, with trailer hitch. It's all I need and a bag of chips, if the money is tight. 19 and 20" rims and tires are expensive to replace, don't last as long, and, in my view, frugal, are not worth the price. I learned long ago on VW product that the more stripped down it is, the less there is to break, or have to pay to fix. YMMV, it's your money, your choice, just sharing with you my thought process before laying the hard earned money down.
