Dealer wants $150 per diagnostic X 4 known codes = $600

Called my local dealer today to schedule an appointment. I have 4 faults when I ran VCDS (no need to post here). I told them the faults over the phone and they gave me an estimate of $600 just for diagnostics because each are a "seperate" issue.

Am I missing something here? Is this normal for a dealer to charge a diagnostic fee of $150 per fault code if they are unrelated? I've been able to take care/handle my other T'regs issues on my own and with local VW mechanic so this is my first interaction with our new VW Dealer.

I kindly told them that was "rediculous" and thankyou, goodbye.

Thanks, but it was a matter of VW won't fix unless they run the diagnostics.
FWIW (I commented each fault code):

The norm is to run a scan and record the faults.

Then clear the scan, drive the car and then rescan to see which faults, if any, have returned.

The dealer isn't going to scan the car 4 times as the one scan will reveal any and all faults.
Yes I understand that but what threw me was them saying they charged per fault code not scan. I asked if it was going to be $600 and they said "yes." I'm going to check with another dealer in next town and confirm.

Local dealer near me is the same. Per issue there is a $150 charge. Just another way to make money and maybe have you stay with dealer for repair because I believe diag cost goes into cost of repair if any is necessary. Also if its covered by warranty then you don't pay the diag cost. I recently had a check engine light due to rough start. Ended up being a engine module software update that fixed it, which was covered under powertrain warranty so I didn't have to pay the diag cost, even though I had to sign paper work saying I would.

My opinion but wonder if this is a reaction to people going to dealer for diagnosis then shopping around for a cheaper fix once you know what is wrong. I don't remember paying a diag fee if I went in for routine maintenance and other issues were found or mentioned. Seems to be the way now.

Agree, clear the faults, run the scan again and see what comes up.
Re dealer charges, at the end they are a business and quoting an hour to diagnose each code seems reasonable for their operations... Local mechanics would be cheaper.
If you clear the faults and post the faults that come up again then the forum could assist in diagnosing...

Re the faults, is anything not working as normal? Do you have electric tail gate?
None of these faults look serious, but clear the faults and re run scan

Initially I had to agree to the diagnostic fee IF the faults weren't warranty. If they were there was no fee of course. Now that they know me (which is a worthy relationship to cultivate) the subject doesn't come up since they know I've already pulled codes. that's the "good VW dealer".

When I went to get a key programmed for my 911 they quoted me $189 whether the key took the program or not. Wound up buying a new key online, took a nice hour drive to get it and have it programmed, they did ALL my keys and charged me $150...while we had a very nice lunch at a nearby restaurant.

some play nice..then there's the rest.

The dealership won't care what your (in my opinion, supreme auto-scanner..) says. They want their own scans. I wouldn't say "I have x amount of CEL's", just say "I have a CEL on, please diagnose" if thats what you're looking for.

With that said, if you already know the CEL's from vagcom why even bother w/ the dealer...

#13 ·
that's true

#15 ·
The dealers I've worked with get you to agree to the diagnostic fee if it turns out not to be warranty since they don't know until they plug it in and run GFF. I've agreed to that but never actually been charged it since I know in advance thats it's warranty.

YMMV

Yep

The issue really was the dealer charging a diag fee for each code. Since I didn't go to the dealer (at least for now) I have avoided finding out what their charge would actually be.

The vehicle issues were Coolant Pump B - replaced, no more coolant related codes appear. "Brake Ware" and "Brake" lights on dash. I made another brake related post about these issues which are still ongoing. Posted Here

If I end up going to dealer I will report back how much they charge for diagnostics.
